3rd Annual Middle Half Marathon—HUGE SUCCESS!

October 3, 2009

It was a brisk 59-degrees when Murfreesboro Mayor Tommy Bragg fired the shot that started the Third Annual Middle Half Marathon at 7:00 o’clock Saturday morning (10/3/09). Almost 2,000 runners started the 13.1 mile trek that took them on a historic journey downtown and around the courthouse where celebrations of the structure’s 150th anniversary were set to begin a half-hour later. The flat terrain attracted runners from as far away as Kenya, along with Colorado, Michigan, Illinois and other states. CLICK HERE for 2009 Middle Half Marathon Results

There were two entries in the wheel chair race. About 5-minutes after they began, the runners left the starting line on Greenland Drive, next to the Dean Hayes Track and Field Stadium.

The mayor fired the shot that started the Third Annual Middle Half Marathon.  It was a casual race, as you can see. Is that a hot dog running? And yes, the woman behind him is on her cell phone. Plus the guy in front of that wiener is carrying a large soft drink. I wonder if anyone packed a picnic?

The Kid’s Fun Run

The Kid’s Run started shortly afterwards in the Greenland Drive parking lot, in front of the Dean Hayes Track and Field Stadium (photo below).

The children participating in the 1-mile run were ages 6 to 13. All participants received a cool T-shirt, an official race number, a finisher’s medal and refreshments. Plus, the first 250 kids to register also received a FREE ticket to the October 17 MTSU vs Mississippi State game, which is expected to be a sell-out at the Johnny “Red” Floyd Football Stadium. The Kid’s Fun Run ended on the MTSU track, just like the Middle Half Marathon (photo below).

Amazing to watch people push their bodies. Next year, plan on coming out and cheering folks on, especially after the first 9 miles.

This was my 5th half marathon and the 2nd time that I have run the Middle Half. This is the most well put together race that I have ever run. Great support, great crowd…very well done. Great job to everyone involved in making this a success!

Excellent race! The publicity and the communication were great. I really liked that you had several options of time and location to pick up the race packets. The only suggestion I have for improvement is for the water tables to be clearly marked with the liquid they passed out to the runners. The Snapple didn’t agree with me so I was trying to stick to water-only and had a little bit of trouble finding it. Not a deal-breaker, though, as I thought it was a neat course and well-organized. I loved the fact that they called out your name in the stadium!

This was my second half marathon this year. I will be running this one again next year. Great course layout and hats off to all the volunteers who came out. I agree with clearly marking the tables for next year and maybe spacing them out further. The tech shirts were much better than the Nashville Marathon. Everything was very well organized.

Got something to say?
