Athena Award Set For April 28, 2016

RutherfordCABLE President Tara MacDougall told members of the Murfreesboro Rotary Club that the Athena recognition ceremony is stated for Thursday night April 28, 2016 at Stones River Country Club. United Way President and CEO Meagan Flippin is serving as the chair of the Athena

This will be the third year that Rutherford CABLE has sponsored the program locally. The ATHENA Leadership Award was inspired by the goddess of Greek mythology known for her strength, courage, wisdom and enlightenment. Nominations are received for women in this community who possess those traits.

MTSU's Dr. Jill Austin received the 2015 Rutherford Athena Award.

MacDougall said, "Recipients are honored for professional excellence, community service and for actively assisting women in their attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills. "

She noted that a new partnership has been formed with MTSU's Jones College of Business for the 2016 awards. The goal is to connect female business students with seasoned professionals.

Another first with the coming year is the Athena Young Professional Leadership Award. This category will honor an emerging leader under the age of 40.

The annual event will again have competition for an Athena Workforce Scholarship. MacDougall explained that it will be awarded to a Rutherford County woman who is pursuing an associate or bachelor's degree later in life.

Scholarship applicants must complete a 300-word essay describing how they have embodied Athena's characteristics of wisdom, strength, and justice in their own life and endeavors.

Applications, essays, and all required information must be uploaded and submitted online by February 16, 2015.
