Blind child denied attendance

July 31, 2008

Rutherford County Board of Education administrators have denied a mother’s request  to place her blind child into Riverdale High and Eagleville schools. Ruby Nicholson was told by administrators to continue her daughter, Melissa Mayo, at Tennessee School for the Blind, despite that it is her choice says attorney, Brad Hornsby. Hornsby, who is representing the student, says the board has failed to adhere to state law by denying her request. Nicholson and Mayo will be meeting to discuss the matter Aug. 7, the day before school begins, with school administrators.
