More and more “Green Dot Card Scams” have been reported in Rutherford County. According to past news stories, con-artist call local residents and tell them they owe money to the courts or the Sheriff’s Office. The callers even spoof the Sheriff’s Office phone number to make it look like the call is coming from the local jail. Rutherford County Detective Todd Sparks explained why the scammers ask the victims to buy a Green Dot Card from their local convenience stores…

The bad news… arrests in cases like this are seldom made as the con-artists are usually overseas and hard to track. The good news – you can simply hang up on anyone who calls you. It’s that easy.
