The State of Tennessee is requiring all auto owners to have liability insurance starting January 1, 2017. Rutherford County Clerk Lisa Crowell says the state is ready to go with online insurance verification.

The Clerk urges every auto owner who purchases a new tag or renews their existing tag to get their vehicle insured before attempting the transaction. She indicates "uninsured drivers in Tennessee run the risk of losing their vehicle registration and possibly pay a fine."

State law requires these insurance limits:

  • $25,000 for each injury or death per accident
  • $50,000 for total injuries or deaths per accident
  • $15,000 for property damage per accident
  • This law applies to motorcycle plates, as well
  • Commercial License Plates must be covered under a company general liability insurance plan
  • Auto loan lenders may require increased limits and add collision and comprehensive coverage.

Crowell says "thank you to all county motorists for doing the responsible thing to get insured and stay safe."
