WGNS Gets YES from FCC for Power Increase
June 22, 2010
WGNS has increased the power of FM 100.5 by 300-percent. WGNS’ Bart Walker stated, “The increase was approved by the FCC several months ago, we just had to wait for better weather to actually climb the tower.” A total of three engineers were on the 325-foot self supporting tower Monday. The wiring and antenna swap went smoothly, despite the thermometer reaching a 100-degree heat index that afternoon. Walker further stated, “The increase will enable our listeners to hear us further and clearer 24-hours per day on 100.5.” The power output of FM 101.9 and AM 1450 will remain unchanged.
WGNS first came on the air in 1947. Over the years we have concentrated on local news, weather, and sports.

The countless hours of preparation, driving all over the country, calling the games and interviewing the coaches did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. FEMA Assistance Available To Rutherford County Flooding Victims, Communities
May 6, 2010
The White House has issued a federal disaster declaration for Rutherford County, making federal assistance available to help individuals, businesses and communities recover from the devastation of recent flooding. Those affected by the flooding should contact FEMA promptly to find out what kinds of assistance might be available to them. Even if you’re insured, FEMA officials say you should register your property. You can do so online at fema-dot-gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA. The Small Business Administration will also work with FEMA to make low-interest loans available in the coming weeks to affected businesses. Business owners are encouraged to file their damage with FEMA and be aleter for further information about assistance.
FLOOD: FEMA Help Could Still Be Coming to Rutherford County
May 5, 2010
More counties have been added to the federal disaster declaration, but Rutherford County is not one of them. However, Governor Bredesen says the counties designated already were on a fast-track because of the widespread disaster. But that doesn’t mean help isn’t on the way, since he ask for the disaster declaration for 52 Tennessee counties…
Extensive flooding was experienced in north Rutherford County, with the La Vergne and Smyrna areas hardest hit.

Significant Risk of Severe Storms Throughout the Day
April 22, 2010
Now, a high risk of severe weather for all of middle Tennessee on today, with a high risk just to our south. High severe weather risk days are relatively rare with only 1 or 2 issued per year, indicating a considerable likelihood of a major tornado outbreak or an extreme derecho event. During a high risk, the potential exists for extremely severe and life-threatening weather, including widespread strong or violent tornadoes and/or very destructive straight-line winds in excess of 70 and 80 mph.
Through the afternoon hours… supercell storms are likely throughout middle Tennessee… with tornadoes possible. This is the strongest storm system to affect middle Tennessee so far this Spring… and the potential for severe weather looks to be increasingly likely… including tornadic supercells. Now is the time to think about where you and your family will go should severe weather approach your area today.
When severe weather threatens, WGNS is your friend in the storm. We will break in to provide severe weather coverage and we send text alerts to your cell phone when watches and warnings are issued. Sign up here to receive weather text alerts, sponsored by Gil’s Ace Hardware in Smyrna.
TORNADO SAFETY RULES:
1. In homes or small buildings, go to the basement or to an interior room, such as a closet or bathroom, on the lowest level. Get under something sturdy such as a heavy table or a bed.
2. In Mobile homes and vehicles, abandon them and go to a sturdy structure. If there is no such structure nearby, lie flat in a ditch, ravine, Gully, culvert or low spot with your arms and hands shielding your head.
3. In large buildings, such as schools, factories, hospitals, nursing homes and shopping centers, go to the predesignated shelter area. Interior hallways on the lowest floor are usually best. Stay away from rooms that are large in area because they have weakly supported roofs.
4. In high-rise buildings, go to an interior small room or hallway.
5. Stay away from windows. Don’t bother opening or closing them. It won’t make any difference to the structure and you’ll just waste time or put yourself at risk should glass break as you are near.

Government Warns of IRS Internet Scam
April 15, 2010
Consumers should protect themselves against online identity theft and other scams that increase during and linger after the tax filing season. Such scams may appropriate the name and logo of the IRS or U.S. Department of the Treasury to mislead taxpayers into believing that the scam is legitimate. Scams involving the impersonation of the IRS usually take the form of e-mails, tweets or other online messages to consumers. Scammers may also use phones and faxes to reach intended victims. Some scammers set up phony Web sites. There is information online at wgnsradio.com, keyword IRS that could keep you from becoming a victim.
Murfreesboro Remembers Tornado…Special Greenway Tribute
April 10, 2010
It was sunny and 75-degrees as a large group of residents met at 12:15 Saturday afternoon (4/10/10) and walked the Stones River Greenway for a quarter of a mile. A special wayside exhibit was located in the center of the path where an EF-4 tornado dug deep through this area one year ago and changed lives and memories forever. Lush Spring grass and wildflowers were some of the tallest vegetation today, in an area where 12-months earlier, a dense forest of century old hundred-plus foot trees hid the industrial structures to the west and the beautiful homes on the east.
Bryan Barrett and Bart Walker broadcast “LIVE” on WGNS the unveiling of the greenway wayside exhibit commemorating the Good Friday tornado…

1-3” Snow Storm Expected Through Monday Evening
February 13, 2010
Today is PRESIDENT’S DAY. Rutherford County Schools and Murfreesboro City Schools are both already closed because of the holiday. Enjoy the snow!
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory now in effect until 6 PM Monday. This includes Rutherford County and most of Middle Tennessee.
Snowfall is expected to reach 1 to 3” here in Rutherford County by the time the precipitation ends Monday evening.
A Winter Weather Advisory means that snow will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibilities… and use caution while driving.
Snow This Weekend Expected
February 12, 2010
FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE…
A winter storm is possible late this weekend and on Presidents Day. A significant low pressure system will affect the mid state Saturday night through Monday. A brief shot of snow… late Saturday night and Sunday… could drop up to an inch of snow… before mixing with rain Sunday afternoon. Some slick spots could develop on area highways late Saturday night and on Sunday… before temperatures rise above the freezing mark.
The brunt of this storm will occur Sunday night and Monday… when there is a possibility of between one and a half and three inches of snow… and temperatures fall into the 20s. Isolated amounts to 4 inches are possible in areas near the Kentucky border. Widespread travel problems will likely develop Sunday night through Monday.
Lingering light snow will continue into Monday night and even into Tuesday… producing additional light accumulations. Thus… travel problems may persist even into Tuesday. If you are traveling across the mid state this weekend… you should stay tuned to a reliable source of weather information… and listen for any updated forecasts… to see if accumulating snow is expected along your travel path.

The Saints Win
February 8, 2010
They ain’t the “‘aints” any longer.
The New Orleans Saints ended 43 seasons of futility by winning Super Bowl 44 in Miami Sunday, defeating the favored Indianapolis Colts 31 to 17 in an exciting game that was much closer than the score indicated. The victory was particularly welcome for the city New Orleans, which is still recovering from Hurricane Katrina, and especially bittersweet for ARCHIE MANNING, the team’s first superstar and face of the franchise. His son, PEYTON MANNING, quarterbacked the Colts against his beloved Saints.
Things didn’t look promising for New Orleans early on, when Indianapolis scored ten unanswered points before the Saints put six on the board with two field goals in the first half. However, the Saints and eventual game MVP quarterback DREW BREES really stepped it up in the third quarter, going ahead 16 to 10 until Manning performed his usual magic, marching the Colts down the field to score another seven.
It stayed 17-16 for most of the fourth quarter until Brees hit tight end JEREMY SHOCKEY with a two-yard pass, then threw a two-point conversion to make it 24 to 17.
Manning wasn’t done yet, slicing and dicing the weak Saints defense in his pursuit of Indianapolis’ second Super Bowl title since 2007. However, the Saints sealed their victory when TRACY PORTER intercepted Manning and ran the ball 74 yards for a touchdown. With the score 31 to 17, Manning led his team to the Saints’ five-yard line but the Colts lost the ball on downs and the Saints’ first Super Bowl was in the bag.
Brees, who had a career year this season, was simply better than Manning, tossing 32 completions in 39 attempts, tying the Super Bowl record for completions.
