La Vergne Becomes Clean Air Partner in Rutherford Co.
February 9, 2010
Recently the City of La Vergne became the first Clean Air Partner of Rutherford County! The Clean Air Partnership (CAP) of Rutherford County is a new initiative of The TMA Group. Based on the success of the Clean Air Partnership of Williamson County, CAP of Rutherford County has formed to educate individuals, businesses, government, and organizations about air pollution, as well as, promoting the use of alternative modes of transportation.
Air quality, growing congestion and lessening mobility are a nationwide problem.More of us are driving alone, making more trips each day, and driving further to get to work. The increasing congestion is leading to longer and more stressful commutes for employees, which can have a serious impact on business in terms of workforce access, recruitment, morale and productivity.
As a Clean Air Partner, CAP will provide the city with:
- Air Alerts on days when air quality is unhealthy
- Speakers for workshops on air quality and vanpool options
- Invitations to their brown bag Lunch & Learn series on environmental topics of interest
- Newsletters
- Simple tips on what we can do as a Cty and individually to improve air quality in Rutherford County.

Recycling Services for La Vergne residents
February 3, 2010
To the Citizens of La Vergne:For a few months, we have been compiling information about paid-by-the-customer recycling services for the citizens. We are not advocating any certain company. This is strictly a list for those of you who are interested in getting this service for your homes. They are listed in alphabetical order.
B&B Disposal also offers the service –along with garbage service — for around $23 per month. They would need at least 100-150 people to sign up before they could take the service city-wide. All items (no paper products) are accepted. They take the items to the containers behind Kroger off Sam Ridley and recycle it. For more information, contact 793-2816.
Earth Savers LLC currently services Goodlettsville, Nashville and Columbia. They collect the items once per month. They take all paper, cardboard and plastics (#1-7). They also take Styrofoam and metal food/drink cans. They also take all colors of bottle and glass jars. They accept a monthly automatic bank draft or credit card draft for all subscribers. They will provide each customer with a 96-gallon cart for a one-time fee of $40. Additional carts are available at cost. The subscriber will own the cart after 12 months. They do offer bi-monthly collection for residents. There is a semi-annual blue-bag collection of batteries, compact fluorescent lamps, cell phones, PDAs, small electronics and ink cartridges. They will start their service when 1,000 people sign up. No cost has been listed for the service. Call Bobby Bandy at 720-7836 or e-mail him at bbandy@earthsavers.org. Their website is www.earthsavers.org.
Gray’s Disposal also picks up recycling in La Vergne, as a part of their regular garbage routes. The cost would be around $15 per month for the recycling service. Garbage service is extra. They would need 100 customers before they start the service. They would need the paper sorted from the rest of the items and in a separate container. Call 223-6366 for more information.
Green Monster Recycling out of Mt. Juliet will pick up the items and your garbage for approximately $23/month. The price will depend on how many people sign up for their service. There may also be a set up fee to cover the cost of the 45-gallon container. This would be a weekly pickup. Glass needs to be sorted in a separate bin. The bin can be no larger than 24-gallon with a lid. There is to be no Styrofoam or black bottom containers. They would need between 100-150 people before they begin their service in La Vergne. They currently service Hermitage, Mt. Juliet and Donelson. Call 319-2101 or visit their web site at http://greenmonstercurbside.com. They can be e-mailed at greenmonstercurbside@yahoo.com.
People for a Better Tomorrow (PBT) — The cost is $14 a month or $144 for the year. They do have a senior discount for those older than 60 and a military discount. They are based out of Murfreesboro. The pickup is weekly and the container is supplied (sorting not necessary). They pick up: plastic (#1-7); aluminum, steel cans, magazines, phone books, ink jet cartridges, catalogs, green/clear/brown glass, cardboard, newspaper, white/colored paper, cereal boxes, junk mail, file folders, greeting cards, hard and soft back books, grocery bags. Please visit their web site at pbtrecycle.com. You can call them at 977-6404. They have been serving all of Rutherford County (including La Vergne) since 2000.
As long we’re in the recycling mode, we wanted to pass on information about where to take old eyeglasses, certain batteries, ink cartridges, paper bags and computers.
The Senior Center is collecting eyeglasses. They are given a local church for their missions or to the La Vergne Lions Club. The library also has a glass collection box for the Lions Club.
Rechargeable batteries can be taken to Lowes, Home Depot, Sears, Staples, Verizon, RadioShack, Target and Wal-Mart, according to the Internet.
Car batteries can be taken to most auto parts stores, such as NAPA, Auto Zone, Advanced or O’Reilly’s.
Plastic bags can be taken to most grocery stores.
Used ink cartridges can be given to local schools for credit for their technology department.
Computer equipment (internal parts, monitors, actual desktop of laptop PCs, etc.) can be taken to Rutherford County’s Electronic Waste Collection on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The location is 1140 Haley Blvd. in Murfreesboro.
Also, for those who wish to recycle themselves, the convenience center located on Sand Hill Road is open Tuesday, Wed, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Also, for newspaper, junk mail, phone books, soft back books, newspaper and magazines, we urge you to utilize one of the five “paper only” containers located at the city buildings. They are located at the Parks and Recreation department, Seniors Citizen’s building, City Hall, Library and Public Works. Please do not place garbage, cardboard or other recyclable items in this container. It is for forms of paper only.

La Vergne citizens are also encouraged to kick off the new year with their own recycling program. Currently, items can be taken to the Rutherford County Convenience Centers or to local grocery stores which have recycling containers behind them (i.e. the Kroger on Sam Ridley in Smyrna.)
“We are trying to gather information to assist the citizens in hiring a curb-side recycling service,” Mayes said. “We have heard from a few companies so far, but are waiting to hear from more, before we make the information available to the public. La Vergne water receives score of 97 from TDEC
October 13, 2009
The La Vergne Water Treatment Plant has been awarded a score of 97 by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), Divison of Water Supply, according to La Vergne Mayor Ronnie Erwin.
“Staff from the Division of Water Supply met with Water Treatment Plant personnel in August and September,” Erwin said. “The staff conducted an on-site inspection and file review of the water system, which constituted a Sanitary Survey. We received word today that we earned a score of 97, which places the water system in the ‘approved’ category of public water systems in Tennessee.”
Erwin said the city is “extremely pleased” with the results and hope that the new score encourages citizens of and employees within the city to drink and enjoy the water.
“Water is one of the basic necessities that we offer the residents of La Vergne,” Erwin said. “We’re happy that we received such a high score from TDEC.”

La Vergne Puts Government TV on Internet
October 8, 2009
La Vergne’s government channel, TV 3 locally, will now be streamed on the city’s website. La Vergne Information Technology Director Matthew Appleton says citizens without cable television service didn’t have access to view the meetings. But now they can view it at lavergne-dot-org. Plus, Appleton says they will begin to achieve the meetings on the website for later viewing. It was announced on WGNS last week that Rutherford County government meetings are also being achieved and can be viewed from their website.
