Book: The Last Policeman

It’s the end of the world as we know it...

Readers and supporters of One Book of Rutherford County can celebrate the end of the world from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday, April 25 at Linebaugh Public Library.

Marking the end of its seventh year, the evening will conclude the annual community read. This year One Book asked Rutherford County to pick up a copy of “The Last Policeman” by Ben H. Winters.

The “End of the World” party will celebrate the novel by including an entertaining, multimedia presentation by MTSU astronomy professor John Wallin on “Killer Asteroids,” followed by trivia contest with “end of the world” prizes.

Afterward, Wallin will meet everyone on the Civic Plaza with telescopes and binoculars for a glimpse at the night sky. Weather permitting.

A photo booth will be available for all your final earthly photos to be taken. Free refreshments including coffee and dessert will be served. The family friendly event is free and open to the public.

Community partners include the Heart of Middle Tennessee chapter of the Red Cross and the MTSU Astronomy and Physics Departments. Corporate sponsor is Murfreesboro Medical Center.

One Book of Rutherford County is an initiative to promote reading and inspire discussions throughout the community.

Each year, the One Book Committee reads dozens of books to narrow down to just one choice to recommend to the community.

This year One Book recommended “The Last Policeman,” which is set in a time just after an asteroid is found to be on a cataclysmic collision course with earth.

“The Last Policeman,” which is the first of a trilogy, won the 2012 Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America and was named one of the Best Books of 2012 by Amazon.
