City of La Vergne going green in 2010
January 6, 2010
The La Vergne Board of Mayor and Aldermen has thrown their support behind a city building recycling program, according to Mayor Ronnie Erwin.
The La Vergne Parks and Recreation Department is spearheading the effort, which will incorporate recycling bins within and outside of every building within the city, including the rental buildings — the Multi-Purpose Building and the Civic Auditorium.
“We wanted to kick this off with the advent of a new decade and new year,” said project coordinator Angie Mayes. “We have a bunch of support from employees within the city and want this to be as successful as possible. We’re recycling aluminum cans, plastic bottles, all kinds of paper (regular and shredded office paper, junk mail, newspapers and magazines) and ink cartridges.”
La Vergne citizens are also encouraged to kick off the new year with their own recycling program. Currently, items can be taken to the Rutherford County Convenience Centers or to local grocery stores which have recycling containers behind them (i.e. the Kroger on Sam Ridley in Smyrna.)
“We are trying to gather information to assist the citizens in hiring a curb-side recycling service,” Mayes said. “We have heard from a few companies so far, but are waiting to hear from more, before we make the information available to the public. They will, of course, choose whom they want to hire to remove their recyclable items.”
