City officials will gather Friday, June 17 for an official groundbreaking ceremony for renovation of the new Murfreesboro Police Department Headquarters in the existing structure at 1004 North Highland Avenue in Murfreesboro. City leaders hope to open the new $48 million renovated headquarters in 2017.

The Murfreesboro Police Department (MPD) main headquarters has been located at 302 South Church Street since 1973. The criminal investigations division is housed at 1734 South Rutherford Boulevard.

The relocation of the Police Department to Highland Avenue will provide both interior and exterior space for expansion in a growing city and interject new life to the area after the hospital and medical clinic relocated to the Gateway. After the Police Department vacates 302 South Church Street, almost 30,000 square feet of office space will become available for other city departments that need additional office space.

The City acquired the former Murfreesboro Medical Clinic (MMC) and acres located at 1004 Highland Avenue in December 2013 for $4.7 million.
