The amount paid for students to attend a public college in Tennessee depends more and more on the individual campus. The state’s largest public college system is now approving tuition levels school-by-school. For example, MTSU will now be about $7,800 per year. Meanwhile, the University of Tennessee Knoxville continues to be the most expensive public school in the state at more than $11,000 per year on average.

TBR chancellor John Morgan says places like TSU could use more money, but the financially strapped school also can’t afford to run off students. They are only increasing fees by about $72. Tuition and fees at University of Memphis are a full $2,000 more than TSU. In 2010, state run colleges in Tennessee were priced similarly. As noted in this story, that is no longer the case.
