Praying Parents
A federal judge has ruled that a central Tennessee group called the Praying Parents must be unbiased and objective in certain activities at a public school.  U.S. District Judge Robert L. Echols ruled Thursday in a case claiming religious proselytizing at a public school. The case was brought by parents identified as John and Jane Doe against the Wilson County school system just east of Nashville.  Echols said a nativity scene at Lakeview School’s kindergarten must be presented “in an unbiased and objective manner without sectarian indoctrination.”  The judge also set the same guidelines for prayers given as part of Thanksgiving holiday instruction.  Plaintiffs in the case claimed a pattern of religious promotion at the school.

Marriage Law Changed
Immigration status will no longer prevent couples from obtaining marriage licenses in Davidson County, and other Tennessee counties could follow suit.  Since at least 1998, county clerks in Tennessee asked for a Social Security card, or, failing that, a valid passport and visa.  But Davidson County Clerk John Arriola changed his county’s policy Thursday after a state attorney general’s opinion sided with a couple who sued him for refusing to issue them a marriage license.  Arriola had refused the couple because the prospective groom didn’t have the proper documents.  Nashville immigration lawyer Linda Rose said the change is good news for immigrants and restores a fundamental right.  But Theresa Harmon of Tennesseans for Responsible Immigration Policy maintains that the new policy will draw illegal immigrants to the state and make it harder to deport them.

Capitol Axes Wal-Mart Audit
Tennessee has withdrawn from a partnership with Wal-Mart that could have made its state capitol the first to undergo an extensive energy audit by the nation’s largest retailer.  Wal-Mart Stores Inc. earlier this month announced the partnerships with 19 states and Puerto Rico aimed at helping them save on energy and electricity costs at their capitols. Wal-Mart spokesman Dennis Alpert says Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen’s office has informed him that the state will no longer participate, but that no detailed explanation was given. Alpert says the Tennessee capitol had been slated for the energy audit by the middle of next month. Bredesen adviser Will Pinkston says the state has decided to move in a different direction after what he calls a couple of “false starts” with Wal-Mart.

Tourism Expects ‘Foreign Aid’
State tourism officials say the summer should see a boom in European music tourism to destinations like Memphis and Nashville, thanks to a weak dollar and strong euro.  The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development says CMA Music Festival tour packages have sold out in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.  Foreign tourists overall spent nearly $362 million in Tennessee in 2006, up 5 percent from 2005.  Many tour operators say music plays a big part in overseas travel to Tennessee.  Wolfgang Streitborger markets Tennessee tourist attractions in Europe.  He says he sees many people who love country music and have dreamed of coming to Tennessee for years who can finally afford it.

From MTSU: What language do you speak? Write? Read?

May 30, 2008

Special News Post by MTSU Today’s Response Editor Gina Logue:

NOW YOU’RE TALKING MY LANGUAGE!–In a recent guest editorial in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, William Scott wrote, “Arabic language programming should be readily available to us in the United States. Reading books or computer screens does nothing to improve aural comprehension, especially since written Modern Standard Arabic differs so much from the various dialects spoken throughout the Arab world.”

This summer, MTSU will offer courses in Modern Standard Arabic from 10:10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday in two separate sessions-June 2-July 3 and July 7-August 8. Students will learn the Arabic script/alphabet, common useful vocabulary and basic grammatical structures. At the end of the sequence, students will be equipped with basic survival skills such as ordering food, booking hotel rooms, describing their daily lives, understanding and giving directions, etc.

Swimming in lake, depending on which lake, may be wading

May 30, 2008

Partner station WMSR reports summer swimming in lakes may be a little more muddy than usual…

Although water levels in TVA reservoirs are higher than they were last spring, drought conditions still exist, particularly in the eastern half of the Tennessee Valley, and almost all of the large tributary reservoirs are below targeted summer levels.

So far this year, average rainfall in the Valley above and east of Chattanooga totals 17 inches — about 80 percent of normal. However, the amount of rain that was not absorbed by the ground or vegetation and actually reached streams, rivers and reservoirs is only 54 percent of normal for the year.

Without a significant amount of rain (from 3 to 6 inches), the 10 largest tributary reservoirs are unlikely to reach their targeted recreational levels by June 1. Levels of those reservoirs are currently an average of 6 feet below normal. Only Blue Ridge Reservoir in North Georgia is at a normal level. South Holston Reservoir in Upper East Tennessee is 10 feet below its normal level for this time of year.

TVA operates the Tennessee River system and reservoirs year round to provide flood control and other benefits. TVA lowers water levels in the reservoirs in the fall and winter to store water that could cause flooding downstream. In the spring, TVA holds the water back to help fill the reservoirs to higher levels for the summer recreation season.

According to the TVA website, Normandy Reservoirs elevation is 872 feet.

Randall Braker, Director of the Duck River Utilities Commission told WMSR News Thursday that normal elevation this time of year is 875 feet, but he added that there is nothing to worry about.

Braker said that last year this time, the reservoir had already lost six inches or so, and the flow of water over the dam was at a much higher rate, around 180 cubic feet per second.

Currently, water is flowing over Normandy Dam at around 40 cubic feet per second, which is the absolute minimum necessary to maintain water quality down stream.
Sunday, June 1st is the date that the release is scheduled to go back to the normal 155 cubic feet per second or roughly 104 million gallons per day.

14-Year old wrecks golf cart, older brother responsible

May 30, 2008

A 23-year old Murfreesboro man is being held accountable for a golf cart his younger brother accidentally wrecked at Indian Hills Golf Course. Reports indicate the 14-year old driver let the cart drive down a steep embankment and into a ditch near hole 6. The older 23-year old brother was the one who rented the golf cart and officials at the golf course say he should not have let his little brother operate the vehicle. The 14-year old had to be treated on the scene for minor injuries sustained in the mishap.

Murfreesboro says: Roadwork continues, new sewer lines

May 30, 2008

NOTICE: From the City of Murfreesboro

A sewer rehabilitation project will close portions of Northwest Broad Street on both sides of, and within eyesight of, the street’s intersection with South Church Street Monday through Wednesday nights next week.

This is roughly between Ash Street on the east and Tommy Martin Drive next to Murfreesboro City Hall on the west.

The work will improve existing sewer lines under the street that experience the most inflow from outside sources like storm water, Murfreesboro Water and Sewer Department (MWSD) Engineer Jim Harris said. Keeping this water out of the lines means less is treated at a lower cost for ratepayers.

Most of the rehabilitation work will occur between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. the next morning, Harris said. Appropriate signage will be posted though little traffic interruption is expected.

GM says they offered buyout’s to 74,000 workers

May 30, 2008

GM Cutting more jobs

As of July 1st, a quarter of General Motors’ hourly workers in the U.S. will be gone.

That’s because 19,000 people have agreed to take buyout offers from the struggling automaker.

Earlier this year, GM offered 74,000 employees packages that included incentives to retire early with full benefits and pension or a one-time cash payout of $140,000 with no other benefits.

The mass exodus will allow the car company to hire assembly workers at half the $28 hourly wage they make now. GM also said it would also try to fill positions with workers who decide to stick around.

After July 1st, GM’s hourly workforce in the U.S. will be around 55,000. Before the buyouts started two years ago, it was nearly 113,000.

The company hopes to reshape its business after being battered this decade by foreign imports, high gas prices and a worsening economy.

In Tennessee, GM has a manufacturing facility in Spring Hill where the Saturn Vue and Ion are made. The plant was opened in 1990. Subcontracting companies throughout the state will also feel the pinch as the company continues to downsize in the future.

Murfreesboro mother accused of letting sober 13-year old drive

May 30, 2008

A Murfreesboro mother allegedly allowed for a 13-year old child to drive her vehicle and soon after, was arrested on reckless endangerment charges. 34-year old Molly Diane Peco, who was in the passenger seat, was pulled over as her daughter navigated past the Sonic Drive In on South Church near Indian Hills on Wednesday. The 13-year old told police that she was actually 15 and had left her drivers permit at home. The mother, who according to police reports smelled like alcohol, evidently failed to intervene in asking her daughter to tell the truth.

Rutherford Co. may see increased wheel and property tax

May 30, 2008

Be prepared to pay more for housing soon. Rutherford County Commissioners on the Budget, Finance and Investment Committee are recommending a 17-cent property tax increase per every $100-dollars of assessed value of your home. And if the property tax is being increased on your home, then it is also being increased on rental property as well. So, tenants living in duplexes, triplexes and other apartments will be equally affected by the proposal when landlords increase rent to cover their increased cost of taxes.

Other possibilities, as far as tax increases go, a $30 increase in the wheel tax. A public hearing will allow for residents to address the increases head on June 10th at 7 in the evening.

Attempted Murder Case Bound Over

May 29, 2008

Two hours of testimony in Rutherford County General Sessions Courtroom of Judge David Loughry led to the attempted murder and aggravated burglary charges against Bryant Overton being bound over to the grand jury.  Testimony from Darice Brown took most of that time.  She’s the 29-year old victim who was shot several times.  Brown told the court she had to crawl some 50-feet on Beesley Road from a construction site for help after being shot December of last year.  She testified Overton shot her before he left with three others.  Brown was rescued some four-hours after the shooting, police say was the result of a cocaine transaction gone wrong.  The grand jury will take up the charges against Overton - of Broad Street - in July.

The Hinkle Family Arrives in Mid-July

May 29, 2008

It took almost two-years for the Pastoral Nominating Committee (PNC) to select a new minister for Murfreesboro’s First Presbyterian Church.  Steve Mitchell, who chaired the group representing this city’s oldest church, conducted a survey revealing the faith desires of this historic district’s congregation.   Likewise all candidates for the position took similar evaluations to help the PNC with the selection process.  John Austin Hinkle, Jr. received a unanimous vote from this diverse committee of eight.  A week ago there was standing room only in the sanctuary as another unanimous vote was given.  That one by the congregation.  The new senior pastor’s first sermon will be on July 20th.  Hinkle notes, “In today’s fast-paced and problem-filled world, the church can and should be a vital and important voice in reclaiming the need for families to grow in a healthy environment.”  He received his Master of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Science in Religion from South Carolina’s Presbyterian College.  He served for six-years as pastor of a North Carolina congregation.  For the past eight-years he has been the founding minister of Providence Presbyterian Church in Hiram, Georgia.

FolkFest Nears…Indonesian Visit Looks Better

May 29, 2008

The great Lee Greenwood song “Proud To Be An American” takes on new meaning as we watch the Annual International FolkFest come together.  As you heard on earlier WGNS Newscasts, the Indonesia folk troupe was denied their visas.  Sometimes we take the freedoms we enjoy daily for granted.  FolkFest Coordinator and Founder Steve Cates reports, “The Indonesians have a second appointment this coming Monday (6/2/080 with the consular section of our embassy in Jakarta.  As they reapply for visas, they feel that  documentation now proves that economically and socially they are tied to Indonesia and are good risks to allow to come here for a cultural visit.”  Plans call for folk troupes from Indonesia, Germany and India to be in Murfreesboro from June fifteenth through the twenty-second to share their culture, customs and music.  They will meet with students, civic and social groups, churches as well as public appearances.  One of those will be a show at 7:00 o’clock Friday night, June 20th at the Leanna Community Center on Sulphur Springs Road.  Admission is $5.00.  The festival concludes in Cannonsburgh Pioneer Village with a free  public performance on Saturday, June 21st, from 4:00 in the afternoon until 8:00 that night.  For newcomers, WGNS reminds you that this is one of those “must see events”.
