Do the math: Social Security Calculator

July 31, 2008

RADIO READ: U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon is urging Middle Tennessee residents to incorporate a new calculator tool from the Social Security Administration into their retirement planning. A NEW website is supposed to make it easier for taxpayers to determine what their benefits will be when they retire, that according to Gordon.  The Murfreesboro native went on to state, quote, “The calculator is a useful tool image for anyone who is approaching retirement age and wants to compare what their benefits would be now or in five years.” To view the website, visit WGNSradio.com - keyword: calculator.

MORE: The calculator is available through the Social Security Administration’s Web site at www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator.  At the site, taxpayers can enter their personal information and receive a snapshot of their estimated retirement benefits.  With a few more clicks, users can calculate their benefits based on retirement age and future earnings, creating scenarios that might be more realistic than the traditional snapshot from the Social Security Administration.

Later this year, the Social Security Administration plans to launch another tool on its Web site to reduce filing time for retirement applications “As baby boomers prepare to retire, these tools will be helpful in reducing filing time and providing better service to retirees,” said Gordon.

REMA evacuates Sims Recycling in LaVergne

July 31, 2008

Shortly after 9:00 o’clock Thursday morning (7/31/08) several persons at Sims Recycling Solutions in LaVergne complained of a nauseous smell in the air.  Units from the LaVergne Fire Department were on the scene within minutes at 417 Sanford Road.  Rutherford County Emergency Management Agency’s Tim Hooker told WGNS News, "both the LaVergne and Rutherford County’s HAZMAT teams made several entries, and the cause of the problem appears to have been an aerosol solution used in the forklift."  Two persons were initially transported to the hospital.  Hooker noted they were in very close proximity to the lift truck.  An hour into the investigation, another employee was transported, however they showed different signs.  It is not known whether that could have been because of heat exhaustion or stress.  All three persons were treated and released.  HAZMAT teams went over the facility for approximately two and a half hours.  The LaVergne facility mainly recycles computer parts.  Sims is headquartered in Australia and earn 70 per cent of its revenue from operations in North America, the United Kingdom and Europe.

Fire Department Get $63K Grant

July 31, 2008

image The Murfreesboro Fire Department will receive a Homeland Security grant totaling $63,277. The money is to be used for operations and safety equipment.  Sixth District U. S. Congressman Bart Gordon said, “The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program provides opportunities for local fire departments to acquire much-needed equipment and vehicles.” Murfreesboro Fire Department Coordinator Laurie Alsup noted that the funds will be used to purchase thermal imaging cameras and rapid intervention equipment, which includes ropes, pulleys, search kits and rotary rescue saws. She commented, “The thermal imaging cameras have color screens that can read up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.  This feature will allow firefighters to determine dangerous fire situations before they occur and locate downed firefighters and possible victims.” Currently the Murfreesboro Fire Department has four thermal imaging cameras.  With an additional seven cameras, they will be able to provide each fire district with a camera. And if you didn’t know, Murfreesboro is one of the few cities in the nation to have a fire department with an ISO rating of 2. That translates into savings on your fire insurance.

Murfreesboro golfer Jason Millard takes MTSU

July 31, 2008

Hurting has never felt so good for Middle Tennessee State University rising sophomore Jason Millard. The Murfreesboro native, who earned honorable mention All-American honors as a freshman for the Blue Raiders, was low medalist during qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Amateur at Willow Creek Golf Course in Knoxville this past Tuesday (7/29/08).  It was a one-day, 36 hole tournament where the temperatures baked at the 95-degree mark.  Millard shot a 9-under 131 during the 36-hole stroke play tournament on the par-70 course. The Murfreesboro resident secured one of three qualifying spots for what is regarded as the pinnacle of amateur golf. The U.S. Amateur will take place at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina, August 18-24.  The morning after he became the sixth Blue Raider golfer to qualify for the U.S. Amateur and the third in three years, Millard commented, "I have never hurt this bad afterwards but I’m pretty sore." And who were the other two MTSU golfers who have qualified in recent years? If you said Craig Smith and Kent Bulle, you’re correct!

Sheriff Deputy Patrol Car FLIPS

July 31, 2008

If you live in the area of Rucker Lane and Highway 96, chances are good you heard a multitude of sirens around 8:30, Wednesday night. A Rutherford County Sheriff’s Deputy wrecked and flipped a patrol car on Rucker Lane directly off of 96. Apparently, the deputy who was operating the car on the narrow roadway lost control when one tire veered off the road. The deputy was transported to Middle Tennessee Medical Center with non life threatening injuries.

At this point, preliminary investigations indicate the Deputy was not speeding when the accident occurred. The wreck is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.

GPS NavigatinoWhen it comes to finding your way from point A to point B (with the occasional visit to point C), nothing beats a GPS navigation system. These devices provide real-time driving directions, displaying your position on a moving map and prompting you when it’s time to turn. Many vehicles now come with built-in GPS, but for those that don’t, you can easily add a dashboard- or windshield-mounted model.

Fans invited to attend Blue Raider football practice

July 30, 2008

untitledThe 2008 college football season is only days away and Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Stockstill wants to invite all Blue Raider fans to attend practice the first week of camp. The Blue Raider football team officially reports to camp Friday and will practice for the first time Saturday evening.

Stockstill will open all practices to the public with one exception. Fans are welcome to attend practices from August 2 through August 9; however, camp will be closed for the remainder of preseason drills as the Blue Raiders prepare for their season opener August 28.

“Like we have done the past couple of years we want to give our fans a chance to come out and see some of our early practices,” said Stockstill. “Our fans are very important to the success of our program and we want them involved as much as possible. This is a time when we put in all our offense and defense and work a great deal on fundamentals, so it’s a critical stretch for our players.”

The team will be getting into game preparations during the second week of drills and by closing practice it will limit the distractions for coaches and players. Also, with the way technology is today and the Blue Raiders’ first opponent being a conference foe, the program does not want things to get out over the internet.

The Blue Raiders open the 2008 campaign at home against conference foe Troy on Thursday, August 28. Kickoff is slated for 6:30…with special pregame coverage beginning at 3pm from the tailgate area on WGNS.

(Story 2) Nissan Offers Buyout For Employees

July 30, 2008

image Nissan North America is offering a Voluntary Transition Program or a buyout to its technicians and salaried employees at its assembly plant in Smyrna and also in Decherd. The plan offers employees an opportunity to receive a lump sum of $100,000 or $125,000, depending on tenure, plus medical and car purchase benefits. Senior Vice President Bill Krueger says they feel the program is a good opportunity for  employees wanting to transition to another phase in life.

The company says factors contributing to the need for the buyout plan are:

  • Rising fuel prices and a downturn in the economy have caused a dramatic slowdown in sales of full-size trucks and SUVs. Nissan must adjust to the ongoing market conditions in order to remain competitive. As a result, the Smyrna plant is eliminating its night shift truck production, effective August 11.
  • Nissan’s productivity at the Smyrna and Decherd plants always has been high. Through this program, employment levels can be reduced in a way that benefits the employees and meets the company’s staffing requirements for manufacturing.

The program spans three years. Employees can elect now if they would like to participate in fiscal year 2008, 2009 or 2010. The election period for 2008 ends September 12. Employees also will have an opportunity to sign up again for the program in 2009 or 2010, however their benefits will be reduced compared with levels if they sign up during the 2008 period. Nissan employs about 5,500 hourly and salaried employees at its vehicle assembly plant in Smyrna, and about 1,100 hourly and salaried employees at its powertrain assembly plant in Decherd.

Rutherford County could phase out insurance plans to retirees

July 30, 2008

Rutherford County Government is looking to cut retirement insurance plans as a way of saving money in the future. County Mayor Ernest Burgess told WGNS on Wednesday that benefits would not be cut all at once but rather, phased out over time.

Mayor Burgess was on WGNS Wednesday Morning, Live at the City Cafe.

(Story 1) Local Nissan job buyout opportunity…Truck night shift ending

July 30, 2008

Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) is offering a Voluntary Transition Program (VTP) to its technicians and salaried employees at its assembly plants in Smyrna and Decherd, Tennessee. The plan offers employees an opportunity to receive a lump sum of $100,000 or $125,000, depending on tenure, plus medical and car purchase benefits. We feel this program is a good opportunity for employees wanting to transition to another phase in life,”

Factors contributing to Nissan’s need for the VTP are:

  • Rising fuel prices and a downturn in the economy have caused a dramatic slowdown in sales of full-size trucks and SUVs. Nissan must adjust to the ongoing market conditions in order to remain competitive. As a result, the Smyrna plant is eliminating its night shift truck production, effective Aug. 11th.
  • Nissan’s productivity at the Smyrna and Decherd plants always has been high, and gains continue to outpace low employee attrition levels. Through this program, employment levels can be reduced in a way that benefits the employees and meets the company’s staffing requirements for manufacturing.

The program spans three years. Employees can elect now if they would like to participate in fiscal year 2008, 2009 or 2010. The election period for 2008 ends Sept. 12. Employees also will have an opportunity to sign up again for the program in 2009 or 2010, however their benefits, although generous, will be reduced compared with levels if they sign up during the 2008 period.

Nissan employs about 5,500 hourly and salaried employees at its vehicle assembly plant in Smyrna, and about 1,100 hourly and salaried employees at its power-train assembly plant in Decherd.

“The marketplace is changing and Nissan’s North American manufacturing operations must change with it to remain competitive,” Krueger said. “We feel confident this program will position Smyrna and Decherd well to meet the objectives of our five-year business plan, NISSAN GT 2012.”

This plan does not affect employees at Nissan’s manufacturing plant in Canton, Miss. Earlier, Nissan announced that due to a market shift to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, it had eliminated one shift of truck production and added a third shift of Altima sedan production.

Nissan offered a one-time program in 2007 that was well received.

Handicap child want to attend regular school in county

July 30, 2008

A local child who suffers from blindness says that she would like to attend Riverdale or Eagleville High School instead of the Tennessee School for the Blind. 10th grader Melissa Mayo and her mother will meet with school administrators on August 7th to ask for the change. This will reportedly be the family’s second request. James Evans with the Rutherford County Schools told the media, quote, “Although we cannot elaborate on the specifics of this student’s situation, we do hope to reach a resolution before the first day of school that is in the best interest of the child.”Mayo was admitted to the school this past May but was later informed by letter that she should remain at the Tennessee School for the Blind due to her current needs.

UPDATE: No Bridgestone - Firestone in Murfreesboro

July 30, 2008

The City of Murfreesboro did not receive the Bridgestone - Firestone Technical Center as hoped for. Several months ago, Bridgestone announced that Murfreesboro was in the running for the center but Akron, Ohio was a close second. It turns out that Akron will be the home to the new technical center that will be built next to their existing research center. If Bridgestone were to have chosen Murfreesboro as opposed to Akron, the company would have created about 1,000 new jobs. Murfreesboro, Rutherford County and the state of Tennessee were offering a valuable incentive package that included labor training from MTSU and real and personal property tax abatements. Akron however had the upper hand, based on the fact that Bridgestone’s research center was already on site.

Miller earned a bachelor of science degree from the University of Tennessee, a master of science degree from the University of Memphis, an education specialist degree from Arkansas State University, and a doctorate in mathematics education from the University of Missouri.

Let me walk around McDonalds with your $7,000

July 29, 2008

If two men claiming to have $400-thousand dollars in cash ask you to withdraw $7,000 from your bank, chances are good they are up to something that is NO GOOD. A 55-year old Murfreesboro man told police he volunteered to give a black male a ride to the bank so that he could deposit 400-GRAND. The victim says he met the man and one accomplice at Home Depot on Old Fort Parkway. After transporting the men to a bank, the men apparently told the victim that they could not trust a lending institution with their finances. The victim tried to explain to the men that banks were trustworthy.

After several minutes of discussion, the victim says he withdrew $7,000 from his account in order to prove to the men that banks are trustworthy. The men told the victim that they could trust him if he let them take his $7,000 and walk around McDonalds with the cash. The case is now under investigation.

July 29, 2008

The Nashville legal firm representing the Rutherford County government in the Bible Park zoning case have asked the Chancery Court to review it as a declaratory judgement as opposed to a petition of certiorari as requested in a lawsuit against the county that was filed by the Shelton family.  C. Dewees Berry with Bass, Berry and Sims explained that a declaratory judgement uses witnesses instead of a government paper trail.  As you recall, the Shelton family owns the 240-acres optioned by SafeHarbor, LLC for Bible Park USA.  That family says they are not suing to get the zoning approved.  Instead, they want to be sure that future landowners are not damaged by Rutherford County’s Section 4.05.  Under that regulation, if 20 per cent of property owners who have contiguous land submit a notarized petition against the request–the Rutherford County Commission must have a two-thirds vote to obtain the requested change…instead of the simple majority.

The black make who suffered from the gunshot wound drove to the walk-in clinic on South Church Street near Middle Tennessee Blvd. seeking treatment. Shortly after, he was transported to Middle Tennessee Medical Center and then flown to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville for treatment.

Four day SCHOOL WEEK to save money on fuel?

July 29, 2008

As you may recall, the NISSAN plant in Smyrna switched to a four day work week to save money. Not a bad idea for all businesses. But, what about schools switching to a four day school week as opposed to five.

Just as private and public businesses have tried to cut energy costs for themselves and their employees by switching to a four-day workweek, a number of rural schools are considering a Monday through Thursday schedule.

MARC EGAN, an official with the National School Boards Association, says that, quote, “For rural school districts where buses may travel 100 miles round-trip each day, there certainly are transportation savings worth considering.”

As it happens, some 100 schools in 16 states have already made the switch to a four-day week even as some parents complained that they would have to find daycare for the day off.
Schools in Arkansas and Kentucky have both considered a 4-day week. In Tennessee, the idea was dropped in Maury County earlier this month. In fact, WGNS learned that state law does not allow for schools to meet over a four day week as opposed to the traditional 5-day school week.

Antioch man accused of kidnaping woman he met on internet

July 29, 2008

A Sunday hotel rendezvous between a Nashville man and a Florida woman arranged through an Internet site has resulted in criminal charges against both.

38-year old Leroy Wesley Bullock of Antioch, is charged with aggravated robbery, especially aggravated kidnapping, and a “Crooks with Guns” violation. Sharise Gregory, age 21, of Pensacola, is charged with felony marijuana possession.

Bullock and Gregory agree that they “met” each other through an Internet site. Bullock claims it was through Craigslist.com or Backpage.com, and that he agreed to pay Gregory $150 for sex. Gregory said she agreed to meet Bullock for a night on the town and to see the sites of Nashville.

Bullock went to Gregory’s Donelson-area hotel room. He maintains the trouble started when he put $90, not $150, on the nightstand. He said the two fought and that he fled the room.

Gregory, the female, contends that when she opened the hotel room door, Bullock yelled, “Police, get on the floor.” She said Bullock pushed her to the bed face down, used zip ties to bind her hands, put a pistol to her head and demanded money. She said Bullock took her wallet and cell phones. At some point, Gregory freed herself and called the hotel front desk.

After police arrived, they interviewed Gregory. Officers saw flakes marijuana in plain view. She was asked if there was any marijuana in the hotel room. She retrieved a baggie containing 28 grams of marijuana and acknowledged it was hers.

Bullock is being held in lieu of $200,000 bond pending a hearing Thursday. Gregory’s bond was set at $3,500.

NASHVILLE: 13-year old accused of armed robbery

July 29, 2008

A 13-year-old who lives in Inglewood is charged in Juvenile Court with aggravated robbery after he and three other young men stole a woman’s purse at gunpoint outside her home in the 600 block of South 11th Street.

East Precinct Officer Ben Bryner quickly responded to the 8:30 p.m. robbery call and soon spotted the four suspects standing in a courtyard of the James Cayce public housing development. After a brief foot pursuit, Officer Bryner captured the teen who later admitted his involvement in the robbery to detectives. Some of the victim’s stolen property was also recovered.

The investigation continues into the identification and apprehension of the other three suspects who are described as young black men in their early teens.
