Americans aint so smart according to Tokyo - Hey, I’m insulted!

August 30, 2008

Researchers at Tokyo’s Ueno Zoo recently tested the mental math skills of elephants and discovered Dumbo is smarter than the average human.

The researchers conducted a test that involved dropping varying numbers of apples into two buckets in front of the elephants, and then recording how often the pachyderms chose the bucket holding the most fruit.

Britain’s Sun newspaper reports the apples would be dropped in groups of up to four at a time — forcing the elephants to keep a running count in their heads. The results:

– The elephants correctly picked the fullest bucket 74 percent of the time. One elephant at the zoo scored 87 percent.

– When the same exact test was administered to humans, they correctly picked the fullest bucket just 67 percent of the time.

Weird airline story

August 30, 2008

An elderly woman apparently misunderstood the instructions of an airline representative at Stockholm’s airport Tuesday and placed herself on a baggage conveyer belt instead of her luggage. Published reports say the 78-year-old woman was catching a flight to Germany when she lay down on the conveyor belt and was quickly whisked through a chute into a baggage loading area. Baggage handlers helped the woman to her feet and made sure she got on her flight.

Local Law Enforcement Gets $21K

August 30, 2008

A $21,071 U.S. Department of Justice grant will help the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and Murfreesboro Police Department purchase necessary equipment.  U.S. Rep. Bart Gordon said, “The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program allows local governments to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions.”  The grant is split evenly between the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office and Murfreesboro Police Department.  The sheriff’s office will use the funds to improve the security of their facility by purchasing and installing electronic/manual locks, identification cards, key card sensors, and software to operate and monitor the system.  Sheriffs Lieutenant Phillip Martin noted, “We’ve been looking at what other agencies are doing.  The advancements in technology and increase in vendors make this system easier and more affordable.”  The new system would allow users to swipe their identification cards to gain entry throughout the facility.  The Murfreesboro Police Department will use the funds to purchase software for an online citizen police reporting system.  Major Hiram Lester commented, “This software is designed to work directly with our police records database and print formatted reports that are suitable for filing alongside officer written reports.”  Byrne grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support and information systems for law enforcement, and court, education, corrections, drug, and technology improvement programs.

Inmate Labor Could Help Clean Area Lake Shorelines

August 29, 2008

The Rutherford County Correctional Work Center is looking at the possibility of expanding inmate work labor to lake shoreline cleanup. Superintendent Alan Miller tells WGNS News…

…on that detail

Miller says there are several factors to consider on whether or not this is a feasible idea…

…started those discussions

Miller says discussions with County Mayor Ernest Burgess led to him being challenged to find additional projects inmates could participate in and this is one that came to the forefront first. The county’s Public Safety committee has heard from Miller on the idea of lakeshore cleanup by inmates and any decision is weeks or months away. Miller welcomes the community’s input and you can tell us what you think at wgnsradio.com. Just leave a comment under the story.

McCain chooses female Alsaska Gov. for VP choice

August 29, 2008

John McCain has made his vice presidential pick: the Republican contender will tap first-term Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, ABC News reports.

The 44-year-old Palin brings working class roots and appeal to female voters, becoming only the second female vice presidential candidate on a major party ticket and a first for the GOP.

Story from ABC NEWS

More About Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin

August 29, 2008

image On Friday morning (8/29/08) Republican presidential nominee John McCain announced his choice for a vice presidential running mate. 44-year old Sarah Palin (pronounced PALE-in), the first-term governor of Alaska, is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and a staunch opponent of abortions. Before getting into politics, Palin was the first runner-up in the Miss Alaska Pageant. She then anchored sports at an Anchorage television station.

In her acceptance speech from Dayton, Ohio (8/29/08 and broadcast over WGNS), she said, “I became involved in politics to fight the good ole boy approach, reduce oil prices, and put an end to local corruption.” That was as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska where she served two-terms. In 2002 she ran an unsuccessful race for Alaska’s lieutenant governor, but was elected governor in 2006. Palin stressed, “I did not get into politics to do the safe thing. I am here to do what is considered the common good. And to do it ethically and with a servant’s heart.” In her talk she noted that the eighty-eighth anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage Movement in America was celebrated three-days ago (8/26). Palin paid tribute to Geraldine Ferraro who ran for vice president in 1984 and most recently Hillary Clinton, “two females who broke ground for women in America.”

image Analysts say that she brings strong appeal to female voters as well as to working class voters. Shortly after the announcement, the G. Gordon Liddy broadcast over WGNS noted that she has a record of creating government fiscal responsibility. Her ideas have produced savings and reduced Alaska’s budget $5-billion. Governor Palin’s ideas have helped to overhaul Alaska’s educational system, improve benefits to senior citizens and underwrite programs for low-income persons. Palin became a trailblazer by being elected Alaska’s first female and youngest governor. She is the third female in history to be considered as a possible vice presidential candidate on a major party ticket (Geraldine Ferraro, 1984, and Hillary Clinton, 2008).

Governor Palin is for America’s independence from foreign oil. Four weeks ago (August 1, 2008), the state legislature gave her administration the right to build a 1,715 mile natural gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska to a hub in Canada.

Liberty Council Chairman and Dean of Liberty University School of Law Mathew Staver said, “She is intelligent, bringing substance and excitement. Not only is she pro-life, she is also pro-marriage.”  It was also learned that she is is strongly against same-sex marriages.

Sarah Palin married her high school sweetheart, Todd, and they have five children ranging in age from a 1-year old with Downs Syndrome to her oldest who enlisted in the Army last September. He is now serving in Iraq. Liddy indicated that Governor Palin supports a strong military and understands that she feels that the actions of public officials have a direct impact on government and its constituents. She loves fishing, hunting and sporting activities.

John McCain introduced her by saying, “She is a union member and married to a union member, former city council member, former mayor and now governor of Alaska. Sarah is a devoted wife and mother of five–she’s got the good grip and devotion that is exactly what we need in Washington today. She has fought big oil companies and do nothing bureaucrats.” Palin is an Idaho native, but her family moved to Alaska when she was age two. In 1987 she earned a degree in journalism and communications from the University of Idaho.

image An article in the Achorage Daily News prior to the birth of her Downs Syndrome baby quotes Governor Palin as saying, “When we first heard it was kind of confusing…it is very, very challenging.” A later article gives her idea of what God might say to her… “Children are the most precious and promising ingredient in this mixed-up world you live-in down there on Earth. Trig is no different, except he has one extra chromosome.” Persons with Downs Syndrome often have impaired physical growth. Many have shorter limbs, poor muscle tone, a larger than normal space between the big and second toes, and protruding tongue. Health concerns for individuals with Down syndrome include a higher risk for congenital heart disease, reflux problems, recurrent ear infections, thyroid problems and sleep apnea.

UPDATE from the DNC with State Rep. John Hood

August 29, 2008

The Democratic National Convention continued Thursday night. With an update, here’s 48th House District State Representative John Hood.

Here’s a clip of Obama from last night.

McCain took note of Obama becoming the Democratic nominee on the 45th anniversary of Dr. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.’s “I Have A Dream” speech that climaxed the civil rights march on Washington, D.C.

The Arizona senator said in part, quote, “How perfect that your nomination would come on this historic day. Tomorrow, we’ll be back at it. But tonight senator, job well done.”

It was the first ad run during the campaign that featured one candidate saying nice things about the other. And unless Obama reciprocates during McCain’s acceptance speech next week, it will be the last.

August 29, 2008

The first of more arrests to come may have recently unfolded in Nashville. Metro Police detectives during the past 2-weeks, arrested five employees of three separate Lafayette Street markets for selling glass tubes commonly used as crack pipes to undercover police operatives who, during their purchases, clearly referred to the tubes as instruments for drug use.

The two-week investigation resulted in the execution of search warrants at:

• Fast Service Market, 175 Lafayette Street, where officers seized 1,056 glass tubes, two large boxes of steel wool filter commonly used in crack pipes, $6,735 cash, 182 one-ounce gold coins, and 50 pipes commonly used to smoke marijuana.

• EZ Market, 157 Lafayette Street, where officers seized 43 glass tubes, 50 steel wool filters, 36 sets of digital scales, two pistols, $6,157 cash, and two grams of marijuana.

• Lucky’s Market, 141 Lafayette Street, where officers seized 193 glass tubes, two large boxes of steel wool filter, one pistol, and $1732 cash.

“Investigations such as this are very important to attack cocaine and other drug use in crime and violence hotspots,” Chief Ronal Serpas said.

Season Opener: Troy defeats MTSU 31-17

August 29, 2008

Middle Tennessee gave Troy and the sixth-largest crowd in Floyd Stadium history a big finish but the Blue Raiders had too big of a hole to dig out of and ended up dropping a 31-17 setback in front of 22,307 in the opener for both teams Thursday night (8/28/08). Trailing 24-3 entering the final quarter, Middle Tennessee scored consecutive touchdowns to close to within 24-17 with 6:44 remaining and the Blue Raiders twice had opportunities to get off the field but Troy converted consecutive third-down plays to keep its drive alive and eventually scored the game-clinching touchdown on DuJuan Harris’ 13-yard run. Blue Raider head coach Rick Stockstill said, “We had opportunities and just didn’t take advantage, but I told our players after the game that I’ve never been more proud of a bunch of guys as I am them. They played their guts out. We just let a few opportunities get away. If we keep practicing the way we have been and keep working, they will have a chance to beat a good football team.” The Blue Raiders return to the gridiron when they play host to Maryland Saturday (September 6, 2008).

(Photo ID: Desmond Gee, bottom, and Michael Cannon pounce on a loose ball during Thursday’s opener. Gee recovered the fumble.)

Today’s chapter of “People Do Dumb Things When They’re High” comes from Oregon, where a 19-year-old man allegedly high on mushrooms was arrested for jumping head-first into a sheriff’s patrol car.

The Statesman Journal newspaper reports Evan Adams was walking away from a parked car around 3 a.m. last Friday when a Marion County sheriff’s deputy pulled up alongside, rolled down his passenger window, and asked Adams if he was having problems. Authorities say when the deputy asked Adams what was the matter, the suspect replied, quote, “I’m high on mushrooms, dude” and then proceeded to jump through the open window into the patrol car. The two struggled and tumbled out of the car onto the street. The incident ended when the deputy opened the back door on the patrol car to let his German Shepherd police dog out. Adams was treated for dog bites and charged with several counts, including criminal mischief and unlawful entry into a motor vehicle.

Man accused of stealing millions from local resident to be sentenced to federal prison

August 28, 2008

A man accused of embezzling millions of dollars from residents in Rutherford, Davidson and surrounding counties is asking that jail staff provide him with food that he can actually eat. Barry Stokes stole millions of dollars from victims through their investments into retirement accounts. Stokes, who is currently behind bars, is looking at spending the next 14-years in a federal prison on charges of embezzlement. Stokes allegedly embezzled over $16-million dollars from over 1,000 persons. Stokes allegedly stole from representatives with the Tennessee Democratic Party, the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters, educators throughout the state, just to name a few.

Stokes, whose false investment strategies were similar to the late Bob McLean who stole millions from local residents, had similar high end taste to McLean. Evidently, Stokes would often purchase expensive electronic gadgets, Japanese woodprints, and designer furniture. The only difference between McLean and Stokes is that Stokes is still alive to face the heat. His case is currently before the federal courts in Nashville and could come to a close as soon as Friday.

Gibbons confined to jail cell

August 28, 2008

A pair of gibbons at the Bristol Zoo in England is being confined to their indoor shelter three times a week to give their human neighbors a partial break from the primates’ loud mating rituals. Britain’s Telegraph newspaper reports male and female gibbons make lots of noise at sunrise and in the evening when they’re exchanging mating calls. Residents near the zoo filed a noise complaint with city officials, stating their sleep was being interrupted by the amorous apes.

Experts say a female gibbon’s call consists of a long series of rising notes and whooping sounds, while the male responds with grunts, squeals and whistles. The experts say a gibbon’s mating call can reach up to 100 decibels and can be heard as far as two miles away.

Arrest Over Parking Space at MTSU

August 27, 2008

image A physical altercation over a parking space on the MTSU campus occurred around 10:15 Wednesday (8/27/08). One female students was taken to Middle Tennessee Medical Center with severe, but not life-threatening lacerations to the head, shoulder and arm. The other woman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

Since the victim is a 17-year-old juvenile, WGNS is unable to release her name. 19-year-old Starlett Custer (pictured here) was also treated and then booked into the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.

The incident occurred in the Bell Street parking lot on the west side of campus. MTSU Police stated that Custer intentionally cut the victim with some type of bladed instrument. The weapon has not been recovered. The case remains under investigation.

County School Leader Consider Dress Code

August 27, 2008

Rutherford County School Board officials are poised to make changes in the system’s dress code, which could require slacks and no jeans. Schools spokesman James Evans says other counties have a similar dress code. This proposal is far from a done deal. There will be public comment sessions before the board and teachers will have input on the matter as well. What are your thoughts on a county-wide ban on jeans for schools? We welcome your comments at wgnsradio.com.

MTSU Students for a Democratic Society

August 27, 2008

With the political campaigns in full swing, pundits are predicting that young people will be more of a factor in the 2008 elections than ever before. Some MTSU students are reviving the 60s’ group Students for a Democratic Society to promote political activism. Member Jase Short says student activism on college campuses never totally went away, but students who rejected the idea of college as merely preparation for the labor force could not realize their goals…

One facet of the original SDS was opposition to the war in Vietnam. SDS members at MTSU say they are opposed to the war in Iraq, but they also are concerned about the environment, racism, sexism and economic oppression.

9-11 Rutherford County Community Fair

August 27, 2008

Not long after terrorist-hijacked jet aircraft destroyed the World Trade Center, damaged the Pentagon and killed more than three-thousand Americans on September 11th, 2001, Rutherford County Sheriff Truman Jones decided to host a remembrance for the victims that would be open to everyone.

That event has become a Rutherford County tradition, held on 9/11 every year since that first event. This year marks the 7th remembrance of the attack on U.S. soil. Organizers believe some seven-thousand will attend this year.  There will be performances by country music recording artist and American Idol Season 6 contestant Phil Stacey and Grand Ole Opry member Jimmy C. Newman, as well as several others.

There will be a huge kid’s area with inflatable games and attractions, a petting zoo with domestic and exotic animals and much more. There will also be extensive static displays of law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical and military equipment.  Parking will be available at the Murfreesboro Auto Auction with shuttle service provided by Murfreesboro’s Rover bus service.
