Gordon Flips And Votes PRO-ABORTION
July 31, 2009
Gordon proved he favors abortion this past week…
6th District Congressman Bart Gordon did a flip flop late Thursday night (7/30/09) that was a deciding vote that killed an anti-abortion amendment. It was all a part of a massive health care overhaul bill that had been approved by conservative Democrats and Republicans earlier that evening.
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Henry Waxman invoked house rules that allowed a second vote. They needed only two votes. In the midnight hour, 6th District US Congressman Bart Gordon changed his vote from yes to no. At that point, a second conservative Democrat decided to vote. Representative Zack Space chose not to vote earlier, but with Gordon’s flip–the Ohio politician decided to join the Murfreesboro Democrat and vote no as well. The anti-abortion amendment was then taken down by a 30-29 vote.
Because of Gordon and Space, it instantly became a PRO ABORTION vote.
National Republican Congressional Committee spokesperson Andy Sere said, “Bart Gordon’s midnight flip-flop should finally put to rest any notion that he’s an independent voice for Middle Tennessee values. When California liberals were desperately searching for a congressman willing to betray his constituents’ pro-life principles, Gordon gladly obliged. And though his lap-dog record of late may render this unsurprising, it’s no less shameful.”

Glue and Hair Fettish
July 31, 2009
A 12-year-old girl in Pasadena, Texas became unglued after she was the victim of a bizarre prank. The unidentified girl was shopping in a drugstore with her grandparents last week when a complete stranger started following her around before walking up to her and spraying super glue in her hair. Employees called police, but the man didn’t, ahem, “stick” around, but managed to escape. An investigation revealed he pulled the same stunt earlier in the day on another woman in the store, as well as on a third victim at a supermarket across the street. The 12-year-old girl, by the way, had to cut off part of her hair.
Trailside Drive neighbor lucky to be alive after aiming weapon at deputies!
July 31, 2009
Shortly after midnight Friday morning (7/31/09), a Walter Hill mother heard a noise in the home. She thought someone had broken into their Trailside Drive home. The woman phoned her ex-husband and he in-turn called the Rutherford County Sheriffs Office. While this was going on, she and her daughter slipped next door to the neighbors. The neighbor had a gun permit, and he grabbed a weapon and went next door. Sheriff Truman Jones told WGNS News, “Deputies arrived at the scene and found a man with a weapon inside the home. They told him to drop the gun, but for some reason the unidentified male refused to do so. He then pointed the weapon at the deputies; who fired in his direction.” The sheriff said the neighbor quickly put the gun down. The sheriff said the armed-neighbor was not hit, no one was injured, and no charges were filed.

Update: Fatal Memorial Blvd. Car Accident
July 30, 2009

Murfreesboro Police say 18-year old Jaycey Drummond of Murfreesboro was killed in the Thursday afternoon crash. It happened just before 3 o’clock. The Fatal Accident Crash Team or FACT investigators believe a maroon Honda was attempting to turn left to travel south on Memorial Blvd. A black Honda was traveling north on Memorial and struck the turning vehicle. This caused the black Honda to cross into the southbound lanes and was then struck by a Nissan Armada. Drummond was a passenger in the black Honda.
The driver of the maroon Honda was transported to Middle Tennessee Medical Center by Rutherford County EMS due to medical reasons. The driver of the black Honda was transported to MTMC, and then flown by Life Flight to Vanderbilt Hospital with serious injuries.

Car Salesman Accused of Stealing Car
July 30, 2009
Used car salesmen may not be as dishonest as their new car counterparts, at least in this case. A car salesman at Hall Chevrolet in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin was caught last week in Milton, Pennsylvania with a brand-new vehicle he took from the lot. Thirty-five-year-old John Sergeant Jr. stopped showing up for work earlier this month, right around the time the 2009 Malibu was last seen at the dealership. For a salesman, Sergeant doesn’t really know his product because a dealership manager called police, who used the vehicle’s OnStar satellite system to track down the car. After locating the vehicle, OnStar officials contacted officers in Milton, Pennsylvania, who quickly found the set of wheels and arrested Sergeant. He claimed he had gone to New York City to visit a sick sister. Another dealership employee who was in Washington, D.C. went to Pennsylvania to pick up the car and drive it back to the lot.

AUDIO REPORT: MTSU’s Tanner named to AFCA Good Works Team
July 30, 2009
Senior running back Phillip Tanner was named to the AFCA “Good Works Team” for his community service work throughout the year. He is the only player from the Sun Belt Conference to make the 106-man team and only one of two players from the state of Tennessee. Chip Walters talks to Tanner in this week’s “Blue Raider Two-Minute Drill…”
Middle Tennessee senior running back Phillip Tanner, a standout in the classroom and on the field, has been named to an elite group of 106 student-athletes nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team (R) as announced by the American Football Coaches Association and Allstate Insurance Company today. The award honors college football players who make outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement.
Tanner, a two-time academic all-district winner, earned the team’s Terry Whiteside award in the spring for his excellence in academics, athletics, strength training, community, and campus. The Dallas, Tex., native led the Blue Raiders in rushing and scoring in 2008 while also garnering National Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Tanner is one of just 52 student-athletes nominated from the Football Bowl Subdivision and the only representative from the Sun Belt Conference. He and Memphis’ Dominik Riley are the only FBS players on the list from Tennessee.
With their unselfish acts, such as volunteering at orphanages in Kenya, building a reliable water source for villagers in Kabul, tutoring disadvantaged youth, and visiting elderly patients in nursing homes, Allstate AFCA Good Works Team((R)) nominees distinguish themselves among the more than 50,000 student-athletes participating in the sport at all four-year collegiate institutions through off-the-field accomplishments.
"Allstate and the AFCA have created a partnership of common interests and both organizations are proud to honor the off-the-field achievements of college football players and at all levels," said Guy Hill, vice president of sales and service for Allstate. "Allstate shares a genuine commitment to the community with these 106 student-athletes, and we encourage them to continue their benevolent efforts."
The total of 106 nominations submitted by sports information directors across the country on behalf of their teams surpasses all previous single-season nominee totals in the 18-year history of the award. The 2009 class of nominees represents 41 states, including Washington, D.C., and 45 college athletic conferences.
From these nominees, a special voting panel consisting of former Good Works Team ((R)) members and prominent college football media members will be responsible for selecting two 11-player Good Works Teams((R)) - one composed of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, and a combined team representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA.
College Football Hall of Fame member and ESPN broadcast personality Lou Holtz will return as program spokesperson and serve as a member of this year’s voting panel.
The 2009 Allstate/AFCA Good Works Teams((R)) voting panel includes: Allstate vice president, Guy Hill; former Good Works Teams((R)) members Matt Stinchcomb (Georgia, 1997, 1998 teams), Mike Proman (Amherst, 2002 team), Mewelde Moore (Tulane, 2003 team), Brian Brenberg (St. Thomas, 2001 team), Zaid Abdul-Aleem (Duke, 1994 team); media members Kirk Herbstreit (ESPN), Dennis Dodd (CBSSports.com), Tony Barnhart (Atlanta Journal-Constitution), Kelly Whiteside (USA Today), Ivan Maisel (ESPN.com), Lou Holtz (ESPN); current AFCA president and San Jose State University head coach Dick Tomey; and 1996 AFCA president Fisher DeBerry, former head coach at the United States Air Force Academy.

We are told that the majority of those who made there way home were from West Tennessee. Regardless of where they call home, all were just happy to see family and friends welcome them back to Tennessee. The troops were in Iraq.
Cripple Creek Cloggers Spreading TN Cheer In Spain
July 30, 2009
Wednesday (7/29/09) night´s show at the 45th annual Ínternational Festival of the Pyrenees featured the Cripple Creek Cloggers as opening act. With several thousand in the audience, the Rutherford County troupe, accompanied by the Rigney Family Bluegrass of Normandy, gave a rousing performance that had all those present clapping vigorously.

FEMA to Help Cover Tornado Clean-Up Cost
July 30, 2009
Big news from FEMA… The City of Murfreesboro stands to receive around $3.5 million dollars in state and federal funding to cover tornado clean-up efforts. That means the city will have to pay for only $700-thousand dollars of the clean-up bill. The tornado that hit on Good Friday caused millions and millions of dollars in damage to neighborhoods and businesses. The money the city will receive from FEMA only goes to pay for the cost the city incurred to clean up city right of ways and streets. A mother and a child were also killed in the April 10th storms.

Man Accused of Running from M’boro Officers
July 30, 2009
More charges are pending, that is the word from a recent police arrest report filed in Murfreesboro. Officers caught one of two men who ran from them in the area of Kroger on Middle TN Blvd. Apparently officers recovered a stolen car that Matthew R. Gooch allegedly ran from. The police report specified that the 19-year old had broken glass in his shoes when he was caught. That glass, possibly from the scene of another crime. Officers also found an empty cash register drawer inside the stolen vehicle. For now, Gooch will only appear in court for refusing to stop for police. His court date has been set for September the 29th.
Ironically, a cash register was stolen from a business on Tuesday after unknown culprits broke the window out of the Golden Express Restaurant on Bradyville Pike to gain entrance. The cash register was found near the business, but the cash register drawer was missing.

MMM - Gas is Yummy!
July 30, 2009
Talk about a gas guzzler. According to Chinese media reports, a 14-year-old boy in the city of Yibin has been drinking gasoline for five years so he could, quote, “become a valiant fighter” like Optimus Prime from Transformers. The boy reportedly started drinking from the gas tank of the family motorcycle to get energy. After his parents locked up the bike, he took to emptying tanks from cars in his neighborhood. His parents brought him to a doctor, who diagnosed him with having a mental disorder, as well as an addiction to gas. The boy’s father said drinking gasoline has caused his son’s IQ to drop and is also responsible for his inability to do basic math. The first Transformers film, based on the popular ’80s cartoon, was released in 2007, while the sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, has surpassed Titanic to become the highest-grossing film in Chinese history.

Sen. Corker Says “NO”; Sen. Alexander "YES" To Sotomayor Nomination
July 30, 2009
U.S. Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee said he would not support the nomination of Judge Sonia Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court. However, Senator Lamar Alexander gave her a “thumbs up”.
Senator Corker said, “I view the Supreme Court as a body charged with impartially deciding what the law means as it is applied to a specific case. I believe Judge Sotomayor views the Supreme Court as more of a policy-making body where laws are shaped based on the personal views of the justices. For this reason, I’m disappointed to say, I will not be able to support Judge Sotomayor’s nomination.”
Senator Lamar Alexander noted, “Even though Judge Sotomayor’s political and judicial philosophy may be different than mine, especially regarding Second Amendments rights, I will vote to confirm her because she is well qualified by experience, temperament, character and intellect to serve as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.”
August 11th Meeting Seeks Your Ideas On What To Do With Old Hospital
July 30, 2009
What is the best use for almost 19-acres of land located in this city’s historic district, and has huge, well-maintained structures—some with historical significance? That is the question the Middle Tennessee Medical Center’s Advisory Council is asking the public? Your ideas are being sought in a public meeting on Tuesday evening, August 11th. Anytime between 4:30 and 6:30PM, the public is encouraged to drop by the hospital’s entrance at 503 East Bell Street.
Hospital President and CEO Gordon Ferguson said, “Middle Tennessee Medical Center has been the healthcare provider for Rutherford County for 82 years. Our current facility holds many memories for thousands of families, associates and physicians. We realize the sensitivity around this topic, and that is why it is extremely important we make the right decision for our community and Rutherford County as a whole. I encourage community members to attend the public meeting in order for us to hear your thoughts and suggestions. Please know that your input is valuable to everyone involved in making the final decision on what will happen with the current MTMC facility.”
What Is The Best Use For Our Community
Composed of community and business leaders, the MTMC Advisory Council was recently established by MTMC. Its purpose is to help ensure that the community’s best interests are served after the medical center moves it operations to a new campus in Fall 2010.
Advisory Council Chairman Bill Huddleston commented, “This public meeting is the first step the advisory council is taking to assure that the Murfreesboro community is well-served during and after the move of our outstanding medical center to new, modern facilities. We hope that many people will take advantage of this opportunity to be part of an important chapter in our city’s history.”
The meeting will have an open format, Huddleston said, to allow for as much input possible.
“This meeting is all about listening. There won’t be any speeches,” Huddleston added. “There will be several stations set up in the lobby of the Bell Street Building where a member of the advisory committee or a staff member will be ready to record everyone’s ideas for re-use of the hospital campus. We’ve timed the meeting for just after work hours so it will hopefully be convenient for people to stop by on their way home. We’re looking forward to a big turn-out.”
Consultant Firm To Study Ideas From The Public
Southeast Venture, a Middle Tennessee commercial real estate and architectural services firm, has been hired by MTMC to work with the MTMC Advisory Council in repurposing and marketing the campus in a way that contributes to the city’s progress and is responsive to its citizens’ needs.
“This is a prime location in Murfreesboro, and we look forward to working with the hospital, the advisory council and the community to realize its full potential,” said Axson West of Southeast Venture. “Of course, this is a big job that will not happen overnight. We anticipate that MTMC and the Advisory Council will be evaluating many options over the coming months. Our job is to seek out as many potential buyers as possible for evaluation, and this process is underway.”
Size Of The Old Hospital’s Campus
Covering 18.73 acres, the existing MTMC campus includes five buildings; a parking garage and six surface parking lots. The main building, located at 400 North Highland Ave., was established as Rutherford Hospital in 1927 and contained 37 beds. New York’s Commonwealth Fund funded the old Rutherford Hospital. In fact, that structure is on University Street and is a vital part of the complex. Commonwealth was a charity established in 1918 by a bequest from Mrs. Stephen Harknexx and administered through this philanthropic foundation. They built a twin structure on North Church Street to be used as the county’s health department. Currently, the hospital operates 216 beds and sees nearly 90,000 patients a year.
Who Is On The MTMC Advisory Board?
- Bill Huddleston, president, Huddleston Steele Engineering (MTMC Advisory Council Chairman)
- Gordon Ferguson, president and CEO, MTMC
- Ted LaRoche, attorney, retired General Counsel/SVP, National HealthCare Corporation
- Rob Lyons, deputy city manager, City of Murfreesboro
- Rev. James McCarroll, pastor, First Baptist Church

- Bob Parks, principal broker/owner, Bob Parks Realty

Former Blue Raider back where career started
July 29, 2009
Former Blue Raider pitcher Chris Mobley will feel right at home in Greer Stadium this week as he and the New Orleans Zephyrs face the Nashville Sounds in a four-game series.
Mobley played for the Blue Raiders from 2002-2004 and was on the 2003 team that won the Sun Belt Tournament. Mobley was also on the 2003 and 2004 teams that competed in NCAA Regionals.

“Allstate and the AFCA have created a partnership of common interests and both organizations are proud to honor the off-the-field achievements of college football players and at all levels,” said Guy Hill, vice president of sales and service for Allstate. “Allstate shares a genuine commitment to the community with these 106 student-athletes, and we encourage them to continue their benevolent efforts.”

STILL LEAKING: Gateway Island Will Cost $174,000 to FIX
July 29, 2009
The City of Murfreesboro reports that there is wide ranging use of the new Gateway Island in the area of Medical Center Parkway. Despite the usage of the city operated park that connects to the local Greenway Trail, the actual pond continues to leak water. The site of the pond and park is where the old city landfill once stood and that could be contributing to the water leakage. It has been confirmed that the City of Murfreesboro plans to spend an additional $174-thousand dollars to fully seal the 60-thousand square foot pond.
The total cost to construct the Gateway Island and park was over $5-million dollars. Of that, the city had to fund $1-million dollars of the initial cost. The remaining 80% was covered by federal money.
Murfreesboro Man Gives Fake Identity to Williamson Medical Center in Franklin
July 29, 2009
In Franklin on Monday, officers responded to the Williamson Medical Center after staff became suspicious that a man seeking services there was not really who he said he was; the man gave conflicting information about his identity to hospital staff.
After being accepted as a patient and possibly being treated, he was later released from the hospital. Officers the moved in and arrested 25-year-old Michael Revel of Murfreesboro for Criminal Impersonation.
Revel, a convicted felon, initially lied to officers about his identity as well. Reports indicate if Revel’s true identity had gone undiscovered, someone else would have been left responsible for paying his costly hospital bill.
The Murfreesboro man is currently being held in the Williamson County Jail without bond. He will appear in court on August the 6th at 2-pm.

UPDATE: Cripple Creek Cloggers Now In Spain
July 29, 2009
Cripple Creek Cloggers and the Rigney Family Bluegrass helped open the Jaca, Spain International Festival of the Pyrenees on Thursday night (7/28/09).
Steve Cates told WGNS News, “It started with a parade featuring nineteen groups. More than 60,000 lined the narrow streets of the old city as the groups played and sang and danced for more than four miles. A typical Aragonite dinner was served in the old castle and then at midnight all groups continued to move among the sidewalk cafes where residents and tourists alike were enjoying their own evening meals.
Late-night life is obviously popular there, since Cates reports Friday (7/29/09) night’s concert begins at 10:30. They will travel to Zaragossa and Utrillas on Saturday (7/30/09) to take the festival to these towns in the region. He notes that many representatives, like those from Russia, are eager to have their pictures made with the American flag. There is a great diversity among the groups present, but the friendship is natural.
(above photos) Cripple Creek Cloggers and the Rigney Family Bluegrass are pictured before the opening parade in Jaca, Spain. The second picture show Michael Graves of Lytle Street in Murfreesboro teaching clogging to a lady in Quillan, France.
DETAILS: in “Cash for Clunkers” Campaign
July 29, 2009
Auto dealers around the country are reporting increased sales as a result of the government’s new one billion dollar “Cash for Clunkers” program that lets new car buyers turn in older vehicles for a voucher that is worth between 35 hundred and 45 hundred dollars towards a new, more fuel-efficient car. Some dealers say they and customers are confused by all the details of the program, but expect things to get sorted out as the program moves forward.
Your clunker is eligible if it’s a 1984 model or newer and gets less than 18 miles per gallon. You must also have proof that the vehicle was insured continually for at least a year and has an economic value of less than 45 hundred dollars. The new vehicle you’re purchasing must have a higher fuel economy. Buyers receive 35 hundred dollars if the new vehicle gets at least four mpg more than their clunker and 45 hundred if it gets at least ten mpg more than the trade-in.
For those purchasing an SUV or truck, you’ll get 35 hundred for a new vehicle that gets at least two mpg higher or 45 hundred for a vehicle that gets at least five mpg higher. The vehicles that are traded in are turned into scrap at a government-approved facility.
The program is designed to help an industry that has been struggling during the economic downturn. U.S. auto sales are currently at a pace of ten million units a year, well below the 15 million units that has been the benchmark for more than a decade. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration says so far, there have been over 20 thousand dealer applications to participate in the government program.
The U.S. Department of Transportation expects the “Cash for Clunkers” program to generate sales of 250 thousand new cars over the next few months.
UPDATE: Colonoscopy Exams at VA Lead to HIV
July 29, 2009
WSMV in Nashville reports that a U-S Veteran who lives in Davidson County is under stress thinking he may have helped to spread HIV to Veterans. Evidently, Ron Hereford had a colonoscopy at the Murfreesboro VA several years ago. Hereford told channel 4 that he already had HIV when he underwent the procedure and he says he clearly told the health care workers about his status. Hereford says his lifestyle some 20-years ago led to him getting HIV. You may recall in 2008, the VA admitted they failed to properly sterilize their colonoscopy equipment. The improper cleaning of the equipment led to 32-veterans testing positive for hepatitis B, C or HIV.
More Money Goes to State of TN
July 29, 2009
More money has been approved by congress to go to Tennessee. $19.5-million dollars will go to a variety of non-profit community action and human resource agencies. Bredesen told the media the money will, quote, “take care of the basics; putting food on the table, making this months rent or mortgage payment, or even buying diapers and baby formula.” The money is being managed by the Tennessee Department of Human Services.
