Millard In Second

August 31, 2009

Middle Tennessee dropped to sixth place at the Golfweek Conference Challenge after a 6-over par 294 on day two at the Blue Top Ridge Golf Course.

Iowa carded an 8-under 280 to vault into first place, four shots ahead of second place Florida State. Baylor is in third after a 7-over 295 followed by Coastal Carolina and Vanderbilt.

"It was a grind today," said Head Coach Whit Turnbow. "But we were able to hang in there. My seniors have got to step up Tuesday and give us a couple of good rounds. We need to finish this tournament up strong and put the second round behind us. I think we will be ready."

Junior Jason Millard remained steady with a 1-under 71 on Monday to tie for second overall with a 139 cumulative. Millard, who had three birdies and two bogeys, is just two shots behind leader Brad Hopfinger from Iowa who is at 7-under.

"Jason continues to impress against a strong field," added Turnbow.

Kent Bulle had a 3-over par 75 in the second round to slip into a tie for 26th. The senior had an up-and-down day and was 5-over through 14 holes before finishing strong with two birdies in his last four holes.

Hunter Green, Brad Simons, and Craig Smith are all tied for 40th with a cumulative score of 149. Green was tied for seventh after the first round but struggled all day by making bogey or worse on nine holes. Simons and Smith both carded 74s on Monday.

The Blue Raiders will play the final round of the 54-hole event on Tuesday.

How Starbuck’s Saved My Life…Michael Gates Gill Shared Life Lessons!

August 31, 2009

image Michael Gates Gill continues to encourage those facing life’ s challenges. The author of the book How Starbucks Saved My Life started his ‘Boro visit this past Saturday night (8/29/09) with a talk at the Linebaugh Library. On Sunday (8/30/09) afternoon he was the speaker at Middle Tennessee State University’s Convocation. And Monday he spoke with students at area schools.

Gill tells how it’s not the material things in life that count. He grew-up in a world of wealth, graduated from Yale where he was a member of the Skull and Bones, and through his heritage acquired a leadership position at J. Walter Thompson (JWT), a 118-year old New York based marketing firm.

Bart talks with Michael Gates Gill

You Never Know What Tomorrow Brings

He recalled giving-up time with the family to answer Christmas eve calls from clients. Gill told the Murfreesboro gathering that he thought this was strengthening his service to JWT. That changed as he neared age 60, and was fired. After that, he lost his wife and upper-class lifestyle that had placed him in one-on-one conversations with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Ernest Hemingway and others. He was also diagnosed as having a brain tumor. Gill commented that his tumor has not been treated, and it is not effecting him at this time.

Gill told those at the Linebaugh Library, “I had no where to turn, and while having coffee at Starbucks the African-American manager asked me if I wanted a job. Without thinking–I said yes!” His honest and humble presentation told of how he has gained pride in such simple tasks as cleaning the restrooms at the coffee shop to living in a small attic apartment. He describes the white plastic lawn chairs and table that are sold at discount stores as his main furniture, and that he is happier now than ever before. He also has the respect and support of his children.

Tom Hanks was so moved with Gill’s story that a movie is being planned. It will be based on the book How Starbucks Saved My Life.

Swine Flu Shots and Regular Flu Shots - One Available Now

August 31, 2009

You may recall it is was in July that the government was asking for volunteers to test the swine flu vaccine on. That was when the US was anxious to get the ball rolling on a vaccine to battle the H1N1 swine flu. The National Institutes of Health even put out the call for volunteers to become the first in the country to get inoculated.

Despite the testing, scientist claimed back in July that they won’t know the effectiveness of the shot until September. ABC News reported that by September, scientists should know how much immune protection the first shot provided and if a stronger inoculation will be necessary.

Swine flu aside, you can receive a regular flu shot earlier then usual this year. The reason - to make way for the actual H1-N1 Swine Flu Vaccine. The flu shot is being administered throughout Murfreesboro. The shots are available in local pharmacies and clinics.

As far as the Swine Flu Vaccine, you will have to wait until October. Just two weeks ago, the Rutherford County School System temporarily canceled all upcoming field trips out of a growing concern of swine flu outbreaks.

Brett Favre SAVED

August 31, 2009

In sports, it’s better to be the hero than the goat. A woman in Winona, Minnesota who went into an auto repair shop last Friday looking for a new fan belt told the mechanic on duty she had a live goat in her trunk she planned to butcher. It wasn’t just any goat, either. The creature was painted purple and gold, the color of the Minnesota Vikings. It had the number four shaved on its side — that’s the number of new quarterback BRETT FAVRE, who came out of retirement last week to join the team. The mechanic, who was doing paperwork when the woman admitted the goat was in her trunk, called animal control, who took it to a vet. It has since been renamed Brett, in honor of the quarterback. It’s unclear if the woman was cited for keeping the goat in a confined space, or whether she planned to sacrifice the goat because she liked Favre, or didn’t like him.

The man stayed in the establishment, where he drank, for 30 to 60 minutes, while the three- and four-year-old children remained in his vehicle. The relationship between the kids and the man is unclear. The man was arrested on two felony counts of child neglect.

Mueggler’s game winner lifts Blue Raiders to overtime victory

August 29, 2009

Junior Vanessa Mueggler rifled home the game winner in the second overtime to give visiting Middle Tennessee a 2-1 triumph against Wright State in a match delayed over 50 minutes due to lightning in the area and played through a steady rain in the opening half at Alumni Field in Dayton, Ohio.

It marked the first overtime contest of the campaign for the Blue Raiders and their first victory while playing extra time since a 1-0 double overtime decision against Troy in the Sun Belt Tournament Nov. 2, 2005.

Mueggler knocked home the deciding score on a hard shot to the upper right 90 from 35 yards out past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson at 103:49 for her first career game winner.

“I really did not see anything when I shot, I just knew I had to,” Mueggler said. “It feels really good to get the win because everyone contributed.”

The Raiders got on the board first at 6:35 when Brittany Persaud sent a cross from the left side, which found the head of Jen Agueci from eight yards out. By scoring first, Wright State became the first MT opponent this season to take a lead.

Freshman Allison Stallard uncovered a loose ball from 12 yards out at 30:52 to knot the scoring at 1-1. The Blue Raiders’ Mueggler had placed the ball near the cage on a corner kick, but when a Wright State (0-3) attempted clear went awry, Stallard shot low underneath Hackerson for her first collegiate goal. She became the 10th different Middle Tennessee player to score this season.

“It was a good overall team win,” Blue Raider head coach Aston Rhoden said. “I am really proud of the fact that we came back from a goal and were still able to win the game. It was good to see us come out, fight and battle, and reap the rewards of a good night’s work.”

The Blue Raiders gained a man-advantage just over two minutes passed into the second half when WSU’s Lori Anderson wrestled Whitney Jorgenson to the ground, drawing an automatic red card.

Middle Tennessee (3-0) had a pair of chances with just over 23 minutes remaining in regulation. Shan Jones launched a shot from 25 yards out, which was juggled by Hackerson. The loose ball landed at the feet of Jorgenson, who attempted to put the ball into the back of the net but was denied by a sliding Hackerson.

Wright State had a pair of chances around the 20-minute mark on consecutive corner kicks, but the Blue Raider defense stood tall and held the even score. Agueci had a chance with 14:15 to play in regulation, but her shot was right at MT goalkeeper Rebecca Cushing.

Cushing came up with a big save halfway through the first overtime. Amber Kasmer slipped behind the Blue Raider defense on a long through ball, but her shot was right at Cushing for the save.

Middle Tennessee will stay in the Dayton area when it plays at Atlantic 10 foe Dayton at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Mother in Law Has Had it With Funny Guy

August 28, 2009

If standup comedian Sunda Croonquist thought her mother-in-law provided her with material before, then she’s probably got enough to fill a few HBO specials now. The Los Angeles-based comic is being sued by her mother-in-law, Ruth Safrin, who claims she’s the butt of too many jokes while also being defaming with racist lies.Croonquist, who is black and married to a Jewish man, claims her husband’s family used to love her routine. However, Croonquist says the laughter stopped when she posted information promoting one of her shows on her website that Safrin alleges enabled people to figure out the identity of Safrin and her husband — Croonquist’s father-in-law. Safrin, her husband and their daughter, who filed suit in April, are seeking unspecified damages. They also want Croonquist to cease making offensive comments on her website, as well in her act. Croonquist says she’s willing to stop using any material her family finds offensive, but she refuses to pay any money. Her lawyer has filed a motion to have the case dismissed.

City Council, 8-27-09

August 27, 2009

All eyes were on the Murfreesboro Fire Department at this week’s city council meeting, Thursday, August 27th. Fire Chief Gaines recommended the establishment of a Public Information Officer position to keep the public informed of major events concerning the department, and to create a single point of contact for the media. The council approved the reroofing of the Fire Administration and Water & Sewer Department Engineering building, and accepted a donation of land along the south side of Joe. B. Jackson Parkway across from Ridge Drive, to be used as the site of a future fire station.

Several public hearings were held to zone areas along Rucker Lane, Agripark Drive, and Hancock Street, and the council heard the Pension Committee’s recommendations regarding amendment of the Murfreesboro City Code. Finally, expect a smoother ride when driving along DeJarnette Lane; over $7.5 million worth of improvements have been approved for the road.

The Middle Tennessee soccer team will hit the road for Dayton, Ohio, this weekend to play a couple of matches against first-time opponents. The Blue Raiders open the slate at 6 p.m. Central Friday against Wright State before they face Dayton at Noon Central Sunday.

“We certainly have a lot of confidence going into the weekend,” Rhoden said. “But, we also know it will be a stiff test for us. This will be our first really long road trip and we are playing two quality opponents in a state that is known for its soccer.”

Middle Tennessee enters the weekend as the only Sun Belt school with a 2-0 record. The two victories it earned moved the Blue Raiders into the No. 10 spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s South Region poll. MT is the only member of the Top 10 with two contests under its belt entering this weekend.

Sophomore Shan Jones leads a balanced and deep offensive attack. She collected her first Sun Belt Player of the Week accolade Tuesday after tallying a school-record tying four goals in the 11-1 victory against Alabama A&M Sunday. Jones’ four scores lead the conference and team, as do her 10 overall points, which include a pair of assists.

Eight other Blue Raiders have added at least one goal in the two games, including three by freshman Whitney Jorgenson and two from senior Jen Threlkeld. Jorgenson found the back of the net two times in the season-opening 4-0 triumph at Tennessee Tech Friday. Threlkeld has contributed one score in each of the two games.

Sophomore Hope Suominen paces the squad with four assists, followed closely by Threlkeld’s three. Jones and fellow sophomore Luisa Moscoso each have two assists on the season.

Middle Tennessee is outscoring its opponents 15-1 and carries a commanding 46-2 advantage in points, 50-13 margin on overall shots and 24-7 edge on shots on goal.

“I hope it continues throughout the season,” Rhoden noted about the well-rounded attack.

Sophomore Rebecca Cushing has garnered the start in goal during both matches thus far for the Blue Raiders. The sophomore transfer has yet to allow a score in 121:28 of time between the pipes and has the only six goalkeeper saves on the team.

Wright State comes into the weekend with a 0-2 record after opening the season with losses at Indiana and Akron. The Raiders finished 2008 with a 10-9-1 record, including a 4-3-1 mark in the Horizon League for head coach Pat Ferguson.

Dayton is 1-0 entering the campaign, having won its season opener at Loyola (Ill.). The Flyers, who were 15-6-1 (8-2-1 Atlantic 10) last fall, will play at Auburn Friday before heading back home for the MT match Sunday. Head coach Mike Tucker is in his 15th season as the UD mentor.

Jones collects first Sun Belt Player of the Week honor

August 27, 2009

Middle Tennessee sophomore forward Shan Jones was selected as the Aug. 25 Sun Belt Player of the Week it was announced Tuesday by the league office. The honor is the first in her career and the first of the season in the league.

“We are certainly pleased Shan got this award, especially given the good results all the teams had over the weekend,” Blue Raider head coach Aston Rhoden said. “We are hoping she can continue to play well and remain injury-free.”

Jones, a native of Y Felinheli, Wales, becomes the first Middle Tennessee soccer player to garner the accolade since Holly Grogan Oct. 30, 2007. Overall, it is the 15th award in program history and Jones becomes the seventh different Blue Raider to receive it.

She had a stellar week to start the season, scoring a school-record tying four goals in the 11-1 home-opening victory over Alabama A&M Sunday. She netted the team’s first two goals of both halves to equal the school standard.

Jones added an assist against the Bulldogs, in addition to being credited with a helper in Friday’s 4-0 season-opening win at Tennessee Tech.

On the week, her four goals and 10 points are currently tops in the Sun Belt. Her four goals scored against Alabama A&M came on four shots, a 100.0 shooting percentage. She has taken only six attempts on goal in the two matches for a 66.7 overall shooting percentage through the week.

Jones was a 2009 Preseason All-Sun Belt Team pick following a rookie campaign in which she was tabbed the 2008 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and named First Team All-Sun Belt. She also was recognized on the Soccer Buzz Central Region All-Freshman Team.

The Blue Raiders also moved into 10th in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) South Region poll following its two victories. MT is the only school among the Top 10 to play two matches opening weekend.

Middle Tennessee holds the only 2-0 record among the 12 teams in the league. The Blue Raiders will return to action with a pair of games in Dayton, Ohio, this weekend. The set begins at 6 p.m. Central Friday against Wright State before a Noon Central Sunday start against Dayton.

Blue Raider volleyball set to open 2009 season

August 27, 2009

When the 2009 season begins on Friday, the Blue Raider volleyball program will look to continue setting precedents as it has done since head coach Matt Peck took over the program in 2004.

The Blue Raiders advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive time in 2008 and has high hopes to do the same this fall.

Middle Tennessee returns All-American setter Leslie Clark along with Izabela Kozon, an All-Sun Belt selection, to help guide this season’s squad. The Blue Raiders also welcome back veteran leaders libero Ashley Waugh and outside hitter Ashley Mead. Middle Tennessee has eight letterwinners returning and adds seven newcomers.

“2009 is shaping up to be one of our best teams here at Middle Tennessee. We now have additional height to compliment our athleticism,” Peck said. “The caliber of players we brought in for 2009 is very high and it’s probably our best incoming class. “We have some other surprises this year and a different look and I think that will surprise some teams as well.”

The Blue Raiders faced a number of obstacles during the 2008 season due to injuries, which included losing middle blocker Sasha McGlothin to a season-ending injury just two weeks into the campaign. In addition to losing McGlothin, three other players were hurt or played through injuries at one point during the season.

“The team has very high expectations for 2009, especially after our injury-laden year in 2008. Everyone is healthy, and the summer has seen great strides in strength and conditioning for everyone,” Peck said.

Middle Tennessee will need to be as healthy as possible during this season as it will play one of its most challenging schedules on record.

“Our 2009 schedule is very tough and we wanted that. The Sun Belt continues to improve overall as a conference and schedules like ours will only help us and other conference schools come NCAA Tournament time. We will be challenged right from the beginning – Kansas, Murray State and Xavier all have previous NCAA experience and all bring strong RPIs into that first weekend.”

The Blue Raiders open play on Friday, August 28 with Kansas at 7 p.m. as it plays host to the Middle Tennessee Invitational. In addition to Kansas, Xavier and Murray State will visit Alumni Memorial Gym for the tournament. The following weekend, Middle Tennessee will play host to the Blue Raider Bash. Georgia Tech, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa and Ohio will compete in the round-robin format tournament.

We are mainly going to focus on getting ready for our nonconference matches. We have a very tough pre-conference schedule, the toughest in the Sun Belt, and I would like to get through that first. We are playing some tough opponents and are going to be challenged early and I think that will help us when we get to the Sun Belt season.

The Blue Raiders will play nine teams from the 2008 NCAA Tournament, including Albany, Florida International, Northern Iowa, Ohio, Rice, Saint Louis, UAB, Washington and Western Kentucky. Middle Tennessee will play three straight matches against teams from the 2008 NCAA Tournament with eight of its 11 matches against those teams in a two week period.

“Our nonconference schedule will go a long way in determining where we end up at the end of the season. I feel having 11 matches against NCAA teams from 2008 will certainly test us. Playing former NCAA Champion Washington is a great opportunity for us to continue our climb as a program. Our single matches against UAB and St. Louis on the road will definitely be an important factor in determining where we will be playing if we indeed make the NCAA Tournament again in 2009.”

Middle Tennessee opens its challenging 2009 campaign with Kansas at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 28 at 7 p.m. at Alumni Memorial Gym on the campus of Middle Tennessee. The Blue Raiders will play two matches on Saturday, August 29 beginning at 1 p.m. with Murray State. Then Middle Tennessee will play the final match of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. when it faces off with Xavier.

Q & A with head volleyball coach Matt Peck

August 27, 2009

Ranking as high as 15th in the nation, the Blue Raiders wrapped up their 2008 season with a 14-3 SBC record, placed second in the conference and finished 27-8 overall. After advancing to the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive year, the Blue Raiders made it to the second round before falling shy of No. 17 Purdue. With such great success since the arrival of head coach Matt Peck, there are high expectations for the 2009 season.

With the close of fall camp how do you feel about your team as a whole? We are relatively healthy and have had some pretty competitive practices. There are 17 players so we have good numbers with few injuries and few missed practices. We have gotten a lot accomplished but we have a lot to work on still. So I would give us a B+ on what we have done so far.

There are seven newcomers on this season’s squad. Does anyone stand out right now as a possible starter? Each has had some brilliant moments and some struggles… Brandi Waller has been great as a middle and Halie Vannoy has been doing a great job in the back row so those two may make the soonest contribution for us. Morgan Peterson has done a great job in the setter position. Alyssa Wistrick didn’t come to us until August while everyone else had been here in July so she is a little bit behind but catching up really well. Ashley Adams-Williams has done some really phenomenal things in practice. Stephanie Daniels andJasmine Tipton have done some very nice things also. So I am very pleased with the incoming class. They have worked hard, are in great shape, and are very athletic. Waller and Vannoy may see the most playing time right out of the gate and with the others it will depend where we are in the match.

Sasha McGlothin was injured at the beginning of the 2008 season. How will her being back in the line-up help the team this season? Sasha is one of the most positive people I know and is a great teammate. She never blames anyone else when something goes wrong. Right now, she is probably around 70-75% and she feels that she won’t be 100% with her brace still on. If we can work Sasha back to being one of our main contributors within a couple of weeks it will be great for our team and will lift them emotionally.

Ashley Waugh took over the libero role last season and is a veteran defensive player. How will her experience and leadership on defense make the team better? Ashley Waugh is very emotional player with a positive direction and is equally happy when somebody else gets the job done as when she does. When Waugh is having a great match, our team is going to win 99% of those matches. If we don’t win though, it isn’t because she had a poor match. Ashley is an exciting player to watch and the girls look to her for leadership on the court.

Leslie Clark is an All-American setter in addition to being the career assists leader. What does it mean for the team to have some one with those credentials running your offense? Leslie has great leadership qualities in the respect that she leads by example. This training camp has been the most focused, dedicated camp and she has realized she wants to make the most out of her senior year. We have made it to the NCAA tournament the past three years with her and I would be shocked if Leslie didn’t lead our team even farther this year.

The Blue Raiders open the season with two home tournaments. How does beginning the season on your home floor against top-tier teams help you prepare for the rest of the year? Our team has traditionally played extremely well in Alumni Memorial Gym. It is a difficult place to play for opponents and is a great volleyball venue. We love to play at home and have great turnouts here with a lot of families coming from across the country. This might be the two strongest weekends we have ever had at our place and I am glad we are playing at home.

Kansas, Xavier, Georgia Tech and Ohio are among the teams participating in your first two tournaments. How will playing teams of this caliber help down the line? Our main focus here is to win the Sun Belt conference. Last year we didn’t win but our record was strong enough and our RPI high enough because of our non-conference matches. If we win the conference it isn’t left up to anyone else and we will automatically make the NCAA tournament.

Izabela Kozon is a dual threat as both an outside hitter and defensive specialist. How does her versatility allow flexibility within the line-up? Iza is another very emotional, exciting player with great leadership skills. She gets very excited when something good happens on our side. The more players we have out there who are playing all the way around and looking for every point the better we will be.

Are there any other players on the team who have the same two-way ability? Not right now. Actually, one thing which has helped our program do well is having specialized players. We can focus on certain things in practice with certain people. For example we will have practices for passers only, attackers only, or setters only… We get more accomplished working in smaller groups than having everyone work on every skill.

Coming off three straight post-season appearances is there anything you see in this team that leads you to believe a fourth NCAA appearance is in the future? This is our most athletic team top-to-bottom, most experienced team top-to-bottom, and best team chemistry top-to-bottom so this will be one of our best years. We have had some great success in the Sun Belt, NCAA, and post season in general. Potentially, if things fall into place, this could be our best team.

The Blue Raiders open the 2009 season with back-to-back tournaments hosting Kansas, Murray State, and Xavier at the Middle Tennessee Invitational August 28th and 29th. The following weekend Georgia Tech, Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, and Ohio will all compete in the Blue Raider Bash on September 4th, 5th, and 6th. All Middle Tennessee matches will be held in Alumni Memorial Gym.

Donna Jaco Honored By Being Awarded "Paul Harris Fellow"

August 27, 2009

The Murfreesboro Rotary Club honored Donna Jaco by making her a Paul Harris Fellow. In presenting Jaco with the award, Rotarian Helene Colvin said, “Donna is always so happy and so upbeat that she projects that on all around her.   She does simple things like putting gifts on everyone’s desk for holidays from Christmas to Easter to Halloween.   She takes on projects like school supplies for children.   However, even those who know her well may not know of the hours she spends at nursing homes and of the people there that she does all manner of things for.  She is always there to quietly help family and friends in sickness or in need and  of the time she spends working for her church and how she uses her love of flowers (especially iris) to make others life more beautiful.”

What does being a Paul Harris Fellow signify

Rotarian Sonny Reynolds explained the significance of being a Paul Harris Fellow, “We are fortunate to have many giving people in our community and in our Rotary Club. This honor recognizes people who give freely of their time, money and resources to help others. Even though they may not be aware of Rotary’s 4-Way Test or the motto Service Above Self, they live in accordance to these principals.”

An Angel Among Us

Colvin concluded, “Donna Jaco is one of those angels among us who is always cheerful and dedicated to helping others. She is also the friendly voice that answers the phone at FirstBank and the person who warmly greets all who enter the Memorial location.” The Murfreesboro Rotary President Beth Smith presented the Paul Harris Fellow award to Jaco.

What Is Rotary’s 4-Way Test

This is the cornerstone of Rotary and was developed in 1932 by Herbert J. Taylor who later became president of this international civic organization.

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The Murfreesboro Rotary Club meets at the Stones River Country Club for lunch on Tuesdays at noon.
