Halloween Football Battle In Florida: MTSU 27 – FIU 20
October 31, 2009
Above Photo: D. D. Kyles makes the touchdown that wins the game for the Blue Raiders!
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL. - Quarterback Dwight Dasher (left photo) sprinted for a career-long 74-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to provide the winning difference in a come-from-behind 27-20 Middle Tennessee victory at Florida Atlantic Saturday afternoon in Sun Belt action. The Owls had one last chance, but a fourth-down pass was ruled out-of-bounds, ending the thriller on Halloween in front of 15,568 fans at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
Dasher’s career-best dash with 5:31 remaining gave the Blue Raiders a pair of players over the 100-yard barrier, as he finished with 108, trailing only the 140 accumulated by teammate D.D. Kyles, who made his second career start.
Neither offense was able to mount much on either of their opening two possessions, but Florida Atlantic scored first on a 38-yard field goal by Ross Gornall at 8:32 in the first quarter. The Blue Raider defense was able to keep the Owls from marching further down the field despite starting the drive on the FAU 44.
On the next MT drive, Dasher fumbled a pass attempt and Florida Atlantic defensive tackle Josh Savidge scooped up the loose ball and returned it 28 yards down to the 12-yard line. However, a celebration penalty pushed the start of the drive back 15 yards. A short time later, on a fourth down play from the two-yard line, Rusty Smith located a wide-open Avery Holley for the game’s first touchdown at 3:30 of the first quarter and a 10-0 Owl lead.
The Blue Raiders’ capitalized on a blocked punt by SaCoby Carter for their first score, with only 43 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Sherman Neal grabbed the loose ball behind punter Mickey Groody and returned it 29 yards to bring Middle Tennessee (5-3, 3-1 Sun Belt) within three, 10-7.
Left Photo: Marcus Udell blocks a field goal attempt by the Owls.
The next punt did not fare much better for the Owls. The snap went high, forcing Groody to roll to his left, and Neal was in the backfield to record the tackle. It gave the Blue Raiders the ball on the Owl 37. The drive was halted after three plays, but a 46-yard field goal into the wind by Alan Gendreau at 12:15 of the second quarter knotted the scoring at 10-10.
Florida Atlantic took its next drive right down the field to reclaim the lead with 8:53 remaining in the half. Smith capped the drive by connecting on an 18-yard strike to Cortez Gent in the back left corner for the touchdown, giving FAU a 17-10 advantage.
The margin nearly grew to 10 on the next Owl possession, but as Gornall lined up for a 34-yard field goal, Marcus Udell broke through the line and blocked the kick to keep the Blue Raiders within seven with under three minutes left in the half.

On Middle Tennessee’s second play after the turnover on downs, Kyles sprinted 43 yards down the left sideline on his only rush of the first half. The Blue Raiders were not able to advance any further.
Udell then intercepted Smith with 31 seconds to go, giving MT one last shot at a score before the intermission. The pickoff was Smith’s first in 187 attempts. Gendreau drained a 23-yard field goal as time expired to pull Middle Tennessee within four, 17-13, at the break.
The Blue Raider ground attack was the focus of the second half’s opening possession. The Florida Atlantic (2-5, 2-2 Sun Belt) defense held firm after a pair of Kyles carries brought Middle Tennessee into Owl territory. The defense forced Gendreau to line up for a 47-yard field goal and the kick went wide left, snapping his streak of 12 straight to start the season.
Left Photo: Head Football Coach Rick Stockstill is “up” with this victory. Tune to WGNS Monday night (11/2/09) at 7:00PM for Coach Stockstill’s call-in show live at the DoubleTree’s Fanatics Sports Bar.
Once again, neither team could manage much of an offensive threat as the clock ticked in the third quarter. Jeremy Kellem was able to get a hand on a Groody punt halfway through the period to raise the blocked kick total to three, the highest by a Middle Tennessee team since the Blue Raiders matched the effort in 2002 against North Texas.
As the fourth quarter started, a 42-yard field goal from Gornell went through the uprights to increase the lead back to seven, 20-13, with 14:55 left. Middle Tennessee wasted no time in evening the score at 20, covering 80 yards in 1:02, as Kyles capped the drive by finding pay dirt from eight yards out to become the first Blue Raider running back to pass the century mark since Phillip Tanner against North Texas last fall.
Udell garnered his second interception of the game on the next FAU drive, intercepting Smith at the Owl 48 yardline. Middle Tennessee threatened to take the lead on its next possession, but a bad snap on the field goal try kept the score deadlocked with just over 10 minutes remaining.
Danny Carmichael led the Blue Raider defense with a career-high 15 tackles, while Cam Robinson added a career-best 14 stops. Kevin Brown and Kellem each registered 10 tackles for Middle Tennessee.
Left photo: This Owl didn’t stand a chance when he was hit on both sides by Blue Raiders Gary Tucker and Emmanuel Perez.
The Blue Raiders will return to the friendly confines of Floyd Stadium for their next three games. The homestand begins at 3:30 p.m. next week against FIU. And like the Florida victory, you can follow all of the games on your local BLUE RAIDER CONNECTION…the WGNS Good Neighbor network of stations (FM 100.5; FM 101.9; AM 1450; over-the-air TV 11; worldwide at www.WGNSradio.com).
MIDDLE TENNESSEE POSTGAME NOTES:
KYLES GETS 100: Sophomore D.D. Kyles, who made his second career start today, registered the first 100-yard rushing game of his career and the first by a Blue Raider since Phillip Tanner had 159 yards against North Texas last year. Kyles rushed 13 times for a career-best 140 yards and a touchdown with 97 of his yards coming in the second half. It went down as just the sixth 100-yard rushing game under Rick Stockstill and two of those have come against FAU.
DASHER TOPS 100 TOO: QB Dwight Dasher recorded his second career 100-yard rushing game against FAU. The junior rushed 14 times for 108 yards, including the go-ahead fourth quarter touchdown. Dasher’s 74-yard TD run was the longest of his career and the longest by a Blue Raider since Phillip Tanner went 79 yards in 2007 against Louisville for a score. REPLAY: SaCoby Carter raced in to block an FAU punt in the first quarter that walk-on Sherman Neal picked up and sprinted 29 yards to the endzone for a touchdown. In the Blue Raiders’ last visit to FAU, Jeremy Kellem blocked a punt that was returned for a score by Michael Cannon. The block was the first of Carter’s career and the 29th for the Blue Raiders in the FBS era. The team added its 30th later in the quarter.
Left Photo: MTSU’s defense was “hot” in the Sunshine State.
GENDREAU STREAK ENDS: Sophomore Alan Gendreau extended his consecutive made field goal streak to 12 in a row before seeing it come to an end with a missed 46 yarder in the second half. After a failed MT drive in the first quarter, Gendreau lined up from 46 yards out against the wind. The Apopka, Fla., native split the uprights on a kick that would have easily been good from 50 yards. Gendreau, who later added a 23 yarder at the end of the half, is now 22-for-27 for his career. The 22 field goals ties Archie Arrington for seventh place on the all-time list.
BLOCK PARTY: Middle Tennessee blocked two punts (SaCoby Carter and Jeremy Kellem) and a field goal (Marcus Udell) against FAU for its first multiple block game since 2002. That year the Blue Raiders blocked three kicks against North Texas. The three blocks today give the Blue Raiders 11 blocked kicks under Rick Stockstill and five for the season. Overall in 124 FBS games, the Blue Raiders have blocked 12 FGs, 11 punts and 8 PATs. The five blocked kicks this season is the most since the Blue Raiders had five in 2002.
UDELL COMES UP BIG: Senior Marcus Udell turned in one of the best games of his career against FAU. Udell blocked an FAU field goal in the second quarter for his first career block, then on the next FAU possession, he intercepted a Rusty Smith pass to break Smith’s streak of 187 attempts without a pick. Udell later added an interception in the fourth quarter to give him a team-best four for the year.
GEE PASSES LYONS: Senior Desmond Gee recorded 123 all-purpose yards against FAU to move up further on the all-time list at Middle Tennessee (left photo). Gee passed Vince Hall for seventh and Brigham Lyons for sixth as he ran his career total to 3,903 yards. He needs only 13 more yards to catch Mike Moore for fifth place.
QUICK HITTERS: Jeremy Kellem’s blocked punt was the third of his career and the second against FAU … Middle Tennessee had two players rush for over 100 yards in a game for the first time since ReShard Lee and Dwone Hicks accomplished the feat against New Mexico State in 2002 … Senior Mark Thompson played in his 45th career game today against FAU and the Blue Raider FBS record is 47 set by Trevor Jenkins … Middle Tennessee last played on Halloween in 1998 when it defeated Southeast Missouri on the road … D.D. Kyles had a career long run of 43 yards in the second quarter, his only carry of the first half … Jamal Lewis started the second half at left guard and Harold Turner started the second half at receiver … MT had not won in the state of Florida since 2005 until this afternoon … MT only had 73 yards of total offense in the first half before accumulating 259 in the second half

MTSU Men take cross country title, women place second
October 31, 2009
MONROE, La. - The slippery and wet conditions of Selman field in Monroe, La. were not enough to keep the Middle Tennessee men’s cross country team from taking their first ever Sun Belt Conference title in the program’s history.
Led by the efforts of individual runner-up Festus Chemaoi (left photo) and fifth place William Songock, all Blue Raider scorers placed in the top 11. Chemaoi completed the 8,000 meter course in 26:42.14 with Songock coming in 27:32.13. The Blue Raiders finished with 36 team points to defeat second place South Alabama with 43 points.
"I’m really proud of what they did. It was a good solid team performance. All five knew they were going to have to go out and do their jobs and they did. Festus and William had to neutralize South Alabama’s top guys and then the three, four and five guys needed to beat the rest of South’s guys," said head coach Dean Hayes.
Hayes received his first ever men’s cross country Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year award.
Newcomer Chris Mason ran an inspired race at his first conference meet. The SUNY Delhi transfer finished eighth overall to earn his first All-Sun Belt award at Middle Tennessee. What was perhaps more impressive was Mason ran most of the race shoeless upon losing both in the first mile.
Mason commented,"It almost felt like an advantage going without shoes. It was tough to get traction with all the water on the course. I was able to dig in more with my toes and run stronger without the shoes."
Senior Isaac Biwott earned the second all-conference cross country award of his career upon taking ninth at the meet in a time of 27:42.24. Biwott first garnered the award in 2007 at the championships in Bowling Green, Ky. David Emery rounded out the Middle Tennessee scorers placing 11th in a time of 28:00.88. Philip Benavides and Josh Wheeler also participated.
2009 marked the first time in school history the men’s cross country team had four runners earn all-conference honors.
Chemaoi commented on the performance of his team, "I am so proud of my team. We worked hard all season and it is great to see it pay off. Chris is the toughest runner on our team and came through even though losing his shoes early in the race.
The Blue Raider women took second place for the second year in a row. The team raced a tough race against a formidable opponent in Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers beat the Raiders 53 to 65.
Zamzam Sangau was the top MT finisher placing third in 19:49.09 in the women’s 5K. Marla Bailey earned her first All-Sun Belt cross country award as the junior placed fourth in 19:58.33. Bailey finished 11th at the Sun Belt Championships last season in Bowling Green,Ky.
Bailey said, "I loved the course today. Cross country is my favorite season, so earning this honor is important to me. I have progressed each year which not everyone does."
Jackie Serem earned her first all-conference award placing seventh in 20:30.52. Samantha Hunt led the pack of Blue Raider freshman finishing 24th in 22:30.52 with Stephanie Smith coming in 27th in 22:14.98 as the last team scorer. Alissa Ruggle, Kayla Bryan and Amber Kassuba rounded out the women’s roster with respective finishes of 42nd, 45th, and 47th.
Hayes said, "The top three really ran well. Marla ran a great race, and Jackie has done a super job of improving in less than a year. Both teams ran a great race in really tough conditions."
The Blue Raiders will be off for the next two weeks before returning to action at the NCAA South Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Saturday Night Hauntings On Historic East Main
October 31, 2009
Some of the historic homes along Murfreesboro’s elegant East Main Street reported well over a thousand trick or treaters at their home Saturday night (10/31/09). One said, “This was down a little from our peak three years ago when 1,600 came to our home.” (photo below: That’s Bonnie and Clyde walking through the fog, then a gang of spooks talk with the ghouls at another East Main abode.)
The home owners went all out with decorations. Some with animated objects, fog machines, elaborate lights and much more. (photo below) Now how’s that for a decorated home? Wow, isn’t that Michael Jackson. If Elvis is in Eagleville, the King of Pop should be in the ‘Boro. And then the stereotypical “nerd” with a sign that says “kick me” and toilet tissue stuck to his shoes.
Central Christian Church (photo below) attracted a large crowd by giving away glow-sticks. And you know, the East Main Street trick or treating is another example of why Murfreesboro is so unique. It was like a living Norman Rockwell drawing of a relaxed Americana of generations past.
Costumed moms and dads strolled with their children down this historic roadway. The same street that James K. Polk walked when he was a student at Bradley Academy. Even Davey Crockett walked East Main on the way to legislative meetings when Murfreesboro was the state capitol.
The peacefulness was in keeping with history, since many Christian religions call this is All Hallowed Eve, the evening before All Saints Day. Many Christian religions use this day as preparation for a holy day of remembrance of those who have been named Saints by the Church. The very next day is All Souls Day, when the souls of deceased family and friends are remembered in prayer.
The staff at Puleo’s Grille had a pumpkin carving contest among its employees. Workers in other businesses wore costumes to work. Note: Please e-mail WGNS photos of your company’s Halloween activities: news@WGNSradio.com

Robber Ask For Job Application
October 31, 2009
A robber in Haverstraw, New York is looking for an honest dollar for an honest day’s work. The man held up a Taco Bell Monday afternoon and then asked for a job application. He walked into the eatery with a gun and ordered the cashier to give him money before heading to the manager’s office, where he requested the application. The manager refused to give him one and told the robber to leave, which he did. Authorities say the suspect, who for some unknown reason did not get away with any cash, never pointed his gun at the manager.

Be Careful Who You Choose to Show Your Home To!
October 30, 2009
A 26-year old man who lives in a home near Mitchell Neilson Elementary School reported to police earlier this week that he was talking to a friend at a gas station about renting a room out in his home. One of three men who overheard the conversation approached the future landlord and suggested that he may be interested in seeing the house. Without further discussion, the local resident gladly told the three men that they can look at his house to see if they would fit the bill. The next day, the resident called police to say that someone had kicked in his back door and stole his flat screen TV and his computer. Ironically, the man told police that he recalled one of the three unknown men who he showed the house to showed interest in his flat screen TV when they walked through the house.
Needless to say, the Murfreesboro man in need of a roommate will probably not show his house to random people he doesn’t know in the future.
LA VERGNE: Police Investigate Shaken Child Accusation
October 30, 2009
In LaVergne, authorities are investigating a boyfriend who was watching his girlfriend’s baby when the child was injured. Ricky Palmer was babysitting the child because his girlfriend was at a job training seminar. When the mother returned home, the baby was injured and had to be taken to the emergency room.
Palmer told police the child fell and hit its head on the floor of a car. Police say they believe the child was shaken and that caused bruising on the child’s face.
Despite allegations, Palmer has not been arrested for harming the child in any way. He was however arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant from Smyrna. The case involving the injured child is still under investigation.
Gas Prices Going Up – Value of $$ Going Down
October 30, 2009
Gas prices are inching upward and the reason will probably come as no surprise to most listeners. Triple A says the increase in what you spend at the pump is likely because the value of the dollar is rapidly falling.
A new triple A report shows the average gallon of regular fuel is now selling for $2.54. Just one month ago, the average gallon of 87-octane was selling for $2.28.
Today, the national average is $2.69.

Senator Alexander Says Health Bill to Cost $1,000,000,000,000
October 30, 2009
U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today made the following remarks on the floor of the Senate:
· “I have an important announcement to make on a subject which I believe will be of interest to the American people: the era of the 1,000-page bill is over. We have 2,000-page bill, a new health care bill introduced in the House of Representatives today by Speaker Pelosi.”
· “While we just know a few things about the bill, we know that the price tag is likely to be more than $1 trillion. Two thousand pages and more than $1 trillion.”
· “Our concern has been with bills we’ve seen so far is a bill that’s supposed to reduce costs actually raises the cost of premiums, cuts Medicare, and raises taxes. The new government insurance plan will cause millions to lose their employer-based insurance and become part of the government-run option.”
In the middle of his remarks, Alexander yielded to a question from the Assistant Democratic Leader, Senator Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), who asked if Alexander thinks “there should be a maximum number of pages that the bill would entail?”
Alexander responded, “I think a lot of Americans don’t like the idea of a 1,000-page bill. I think they’ll like even less a 2,000-page bill. I think what the American people want us to do is not have a comprehensive bill full of surprises but reduce the cost of health care premiums and reduce the cost of government and go step by step to meet that goal.”

Former Tennis Great Andre Agassi Tells All
October 29, 2009
Former tennis superstar ANDRE AGASSI says about his memoir, Open: An Autobiography, that, quote, “Whatever revelations exist, you’ll get to see them in full glory.”
And how.In the book, which hits stores November 9th, the eight-time Grand Slam singles tennis champ reveals among other things:
–He used crystal meth extensively during 1997, claiming, quote, “I never felt so alive, so hopeful, and I never felt such energy. That was also the same year Agassi’s career came to a crashing halt and he was reduced to playing in tennis’ minor league.
–When he tested positive for drugs, Agassi lied to the Association of Tennis Professionals tour that he accidentally drank from a soda cup spiked with meth belonging to an assistant named “Slim.”
–Even while achieving great heights in the sport, Agassi says that his overbearing father made him hate tennis, quote, “with a dark and secret passion.”
–As a nine-year-old, he used to hustle adults on the tennis court, including beating ex-football Hall of Famer JIM BROWN to win a $500 bet for his father.
Despite his precipitous fall from grace, Agassi regained the number-one ranking in the world before retiring from the pro tour. He was once married to actress BROOKE SHIELDS and was romantically linked to BARBRA STREISAND before marrying former tennis great STEFFI GRAF, with whom he has two children.
Agassi was reportedly paid $5 million to pen his autobiography. Meanwhile, the World Anti-Doping Agency wants the ATP to come up with an explanation about Agassi’s failed drug test.

October 28, 2009

BFI’s Middle Point Landfill in Walter Hill had “green belt” protection in the past. The property assessor commented . . .
WGNS asked Boner how soon the county will realize additional property tax revenue from BFI with the change in their status . . .
Assessor Boner vowed, “My goal is to treat everyone equal and go by the letter of the law. We’re making certain all property that is classified as Green Belt meets the criteria of this state law.”
