MTSU Student Faces Threat Charges
June 30, 2010
A 29-year old MTSU student will be in court next Thursday to face felony charges for sending an e-mail with racial slurs and an alleged threat to a Clarksville city councilman. The e-mail was sent last August to David Allen, who is a black leader in the Montgomery County town. The T-B-I traced the e-mail back to Andrew Gardonia. Agents also seized his computer. Allen proposed an ordinance that would have limited the operating hours of the Clarksville Speedway. That proposal failed, but it’s during that time when the e-mail – allegedly full of expletives and racist words – was sent. The April Montgomery County grand jury indicted Gardonia on two-counts of harassment and one count of civil rights intimidation. The single count – a felony – is punishable by up to 12-years in jail or probation and a five-thousand dollar fine. Gardonia is currently free on bond, which was posted after his arrest on April 15th.

Potential challengers will be Jordan Slay, Richard Garvin and Carolyn Peebles, who have all picked up their petitions, but have not formally qualified. There is still over a month left for those wishing to seek one of the offices. The petition deadline is August 19th at noon. Those papers have to be turned in to the Rutherford County Election Commission.
Disaster Assistance Deadlines Extended
June 30, 2010
Governor Phil Bredesen has announced Tennessee has requested and received a 30-day extension of deadlines for FEMA assistance programs that will assist individuals in the 46 counties eligible for Individual Assistance as a result of the extreme weather and flooding that struck the state April 30 – May 2. FEMA has approved the state’s request to extend the registration deadline for Individual Assistance to August 5, 2010. Disaster survivors in the counties designated for Individual Assistance may apply online anytime at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or call the FEMA HelpLine at 800-621-FEMA for those with speech and hearing disabilities. Two other deadlines have also been extended. The deadline for filing a proof-of-loss statement under the standard flood insurance policy from FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program has been extended for an additional 30 days. Proof-of-loss is usually required within 60 days from the date of loss. Also, the deadline to submit a loan application to the U.S. Small Business Administration has been extended to August 5.

59-Year Old Great Grandmother Tried To Kill Herself and 5-Year Old Great Grandson
June 30, 2010
A 59-year-old woman is being held at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center in lieu of $250,000 bond. Mary Anthony Bennett (mugshot on left) of 8616 Halls Hill Pike was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse. Her 5-year old great grandson, Isaiah Bennett, was released Monday (6/28/10) from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital.
Reports from Sheriffs’ Detective Sergeant Dan Goodwin indicate the tragic incident occurred on June 21st. The woman’s husband came home and looked everywhere for his wife and the little boy. He discovered a locked bedroom door. Once inside, he reportedly found Mary and little Isaiah barely breathing.
Goodwin told WGNS News that the Halls Hill Pike woman also goes by the name Mary Bennett Williams.
WGNS has learned that Mary Bennett recovered enough last a week ago Thursday (6/24/2010) to be interviewed by Detectives Steve Kohler and Bryant Gregory. Since the investigation is underway and evidence is being collected, the sheriff’s office is not releasing the contents of the suicide note, how the crime was attempted or any other additional information.
Mary Anthony Bennett was released from StoneCrest Medical Center last Friday (6/25/2010). At that point, Detective Kohler took the great grandmother into custody. Bennett’s first court appearance is set for this coming Tuesday (7/6/2010) in the Rutherford County General Sessions Court. WGNS News will keep you informed.
RCSO and State Narcotics Destroy $150K of Marijuana
June 30, 2010
About $150,000 worth of marijuana plants, some more than seven feet tall, were chopped down and destroyed Wednesday (6/30/2010) by narcotics officers from the Rutherford County Sheriffs Office and members of the Governor’s Task Force for Marijuana Eradication. The find was on Shores Road, near the Blackman community.
Sheriff’s Narcotics Lieutenant Egon Grissom (pictured above in one of the marijuana fields on Shores Road) told WGNS News that a suspect fled into heavy woods behind the home at 5572 Shores Road when officers arrived. He indicated that the two pot patches were found around 1:00 o’clock Wednesday (6/30/2010) afternoon and had almost 150 plants. Grissom said the general rule of thumb is that plants are given a nominal value of about $1,000 each as each can produce up to a pound of marijuana. That translates into $150,000 of marijuana have been kept off the streets.
A search warrant for the house was prepared on-scene with a laptop computer as officers chopped and uprooted plants. When the home’s owner, who is believed to have been the person who fled, is captured, Grissom noted that the suspect will be charged with manufacturing marijuana. Word from authorities at the scene say other charges could accrue.
Rorrie Scales and Johnny Cheers Arrested For Aggravated Burglary
June 30, 2010
Here’s an update on the Tuesday (6/29/10) burglary in progress call on Hembree Street. 19-year old Rorrie Scales and 27-year old Johnny Cheers were arrested in this case. An alert citizen notified police of the incident, and officers arrived within three-minutes. The two suspects were located inside the apartment by a K-9 officer. As you recall from earlier broadcasts, once the door was kicked-in…the intruders entered and locked the front door behind them. Officers did see blood on the screen and a footprint on the door. Major Clyde Adkisson told WGNS News that a K-9 dog was brought to the scene . . .
Rorrie Scales and Johnny Cheers were taken to the ER at Middle Tennessee Medical Center for treatment of “dog bite wounds”. They were then released to the police, and booked on charges of aggravated burglary. Other charges are pending. WGNS News will keep you informed.

Four Armed Males Rob MTSU Student Tuesday Night
June 30, 2010
Murfreesboro Police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred shortly after 9:00 o’clock Tuesday night (6/29/2010). The MTSU student living at 415 Minerva Drive told Officer Nathan Hix that he and three friends were in the apartment. He went to the back door and was confronted by four black males. Two were armed with long guns, another had a silver handgun, and the final person had a black handgun. The student was forced back at gunpoint, and the culprits demanded “dope and money”. Since that was not available, the intruders took a Glock 40 caliber pistol, an LG cellphone, several personal items including the 20-year old student’s wallet that contained thirty-five dollars cash, drivers license, credit card and personal ID’s. If you have information that would help police solve this crime, and you wish to remain anonymous: call CrimeStoppers at 893-STOP (7867). Not even the police know who you are. If your tip leads to an arrest and conviction, you are eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.

33rd Annual Uncle Dave Macon Days Festival July 9-11
June 29, 2010
The 33rd Annual Uncle Dave Macon Days Festival, one of an elite group of highly charged down-home National music and dance competitions, is set for July 9-11, at Cannonsburgh Village in historic Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
The festival is home to the National Old-Time Championships in banjo, clogging and buckdancing as proclaimed in 1986 by the U.S. House of Representatives.
A purse of more than $15,000 is at stake during Friday and Saturday’s Uncle Dave Macon Days competitions.
The family-oriented event features heritage activities for children, including an instrument petting zoo, mouth-watering local concessions, a juried arts and crafts show, living history demonstrations in the blacksmith shop, shape-note singing in the chapel, free workshops, a historic photo exhibit and a Sunday Gospel Sing and Community Service Fair that goes from noon until 4 p.m. July 11.
The Atlanta-based Southeast Tourism Society has chosen it as one of the top 20 tourism events in 2010 for July. The American Bus Association designated Uncle Dave Macon Days as one of the Top 100 events in North America for 2008. Uncle Dave Macon Days annually draw more than 40,000 people.
Two coveted awards are presented at the event. The Trailblazer Award will be given on Friday evening to banjo player and performer Curtis McPeake. This honor is bestowed on those whose careers have blazed a trail in traditional music. On Saturday, multi-talented husband-and-wife duo Norman and Nancy Blake will be presented the 2010 Heritage Award. The Heritage Award is given to individuals dedicated to the preservation and advancement of old-time music and dance.
The festival was established first as a two-hour banjo picking on the lawn of the historic Rutherford County Courthouse on the public square to honor the memory and times of Uncle Dave Macon. Uncle Dave lived near Murfreesboro in the Kittrell community, and is considered the first Grand Ole Opry superstar. A master old-time banjo player and performer, he died in 1952, and was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966.
This year’s celebration takes place in Cannonsburgh, an authentic pioneer village that is home to more than 20 restored log structures. MPD K-9 Locates Two Burglary Suspects Tuesday Afternoon
June 29, 2010
At 2:01 Tuesday afternoon (6/29/2010) Murfreesboro Police received a call about a residential burglary in progress. Witnesses told the 911 operator that two males kicked-in the front door and entered the apartment. Within three-minutes the first officer was on-the-scene at 104-A Hembree Street. The police report shows that blood was on the screen and there was a foot print on the door. Major Clyde Adkisson told WGNS News, “Officers tried to open the door, but it was closed and secured.” Because of that, police thought there was a good chance the burglars were still inside the home. They waited for the home owner to arrive and entered with the key.
Major Adkisson explained
The names of the two suspects have not been announced. However, when they the two males are released from the ER at Middle Tennessee Medical Center they will be charged with aggravated burglary. Other charges are pending. WGNS News will keep you informed.

Customer Arrested At Chef Wang’s Restaurant Saturday
June 29, 2010
As motorists passed Chef Wang’s Restaurant Saturday afternoon, they wondered by police had the parking lot closed and there were firetrucks along the street. The Murfreesboro Police Department’s “Incident Report” shows that at 3:45 Saturday afternoon (6/26/2010), that Chef Wang called police to help with an “unwanted guest”. The report quotes the restaurant manager as saying the man was a regular customer and waitresses felt that he was stalking them. Chef Wang said that the man also often carried an exposed handgun. Murfreesboro Police Officers Rottero and Bradley arrived at 1145 Northwest Broad Street and spoke with 59-year old Timothy Lane Battle. An NCIC search showed that the Majesty Drive resident did not have a “permit to carry a weapon”. He was asked if he had a weapon, and the self-employed man produced a handgun from his pocket. A frisk of the customer found two knives, one of which was a switchblade. Battle allowed Murfreesboro Police to search his gold 2006 GMC pickup truck.
Homeland Security and the Tennessee Highway Patrol were called when an explosive device was found along with several other weapons.
Timothy Lane Battle was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, having seven prohibited weapons, possession of a firearm where alcohol is served, unlawful carrying/possession of six weapons. His bond was set at $100,000, and Battle’s first court hearing is set for August 12th.

County Pulls Workhouse Program From LaVergne…10-Year City Employee Fired
June 29, 2010
It has been learned that the Rutherford County Correctional Work Center’s inmate work program was earlier pulled from the City of LaVergne. That was brought about when an inmate filed an intimidation complaint against 10-year LaVergne city employee Jon Taylor. Allegedly, as a result, about two-weeks ago Taylor was given his pink slip. The written complaint alleges that Taylor threatened to have the inmate fired from his work release program in LaVergne, which could add time to his sentence. Reportedly, that was one of several issues on record dealing with the city employee. The county has now reinstated the Correctional Work Center’s program with that city. LaVergne Mayor Ronnie Irwin indicated that the inmate program does much good for this northern municipality and saves tax dollars. Jon Taylor has requested a hearing in an effort to get his job back.
Islamic Center of Murfreesboro leaders on WGNS Friday morning (8:10-9:00AM)
June 29, 2010
Leaders with the proposed new Islamic Center of Murfreesboro at 2700 Veals Road will be on WGNS this Friday morning (8:10-9:00AM) to share their reasons to expand their religious facilities here. Those of the Islamic faith currently meet at 862 Middle Tennessee Boulevard.
Cemetery Conditional Use Request Has Been Withdrawn
In the meantime, the local Islamic officials have withdrawn their request from the county for a conditional use permit to allow a cemetery to be included on the 15.02 acres of land at 2700 Veals Road. The written request was submitted to Rutherford County by Huddleston-Steele Engineering. However, it was evidently not done in time to be included in the next Board of
Zoning Appeals (BZA) agenda. That meeting is slated for July 14th. Reportedly, the conditional use permit can be requested again in the future.
Nashville Islamic Leaders Negotiating To Purchase Old Theatre In Hickory Hollow
The Islamic community in neighboring Nashville is also in the news with efforts to purchase the now closed Bell Forge Cinema in Hickory Hollow for a Tennessee center. Final negotiations are reportedly underway between the religious group and Carmike Cinemas. That is the site that was being eyed by Nashville State Community College. A group of educators allegedly are asking the theatre owners to reconsider their offer.
State Representative Carr Announces Several Local Art Grants
June 28, 2010
48th District State Representative Joe Carr announced that several Rutherford County groups have received art grants. Those receiving some of the $7.3-million in support from the Tennessee Arts Commission are: Kids for the Creative Arts, Inc., Youth Empowerment Through Arts and Humanities, Children’s Museum Corporation of Rutherford County/Discovery Center, Main Street: Murfreesboro/Rutherford County, Inc., and International Folkloric Society Planning Council. The Lascassas Republican stated, “The arts are an integral presence in our community and I could not be more pleased that they will continue to receive the necessary funding. Incoming Chair of the Tennessee Arts Commission Ellen M. Hays said, “This state is indeed fortunate to have elected leaders who support the work of the Tennessee Arts Commission in building better communities through the arts.” She notes that these 850 grants have a direct impact on communities across Tennessee, in both urban and rural areas. Grant categories include: Arts Build Communities, Arts Access, Arts Education, Arts Project Support, Funds for At-Risk Youth, General Operating Support, Individual Artist Fellowships, Major Cultural Institutions, Rural Arts Project Support, Student Ticket Subsidy, Technical Assistance, Touring, Special Opportunities, and Professional Development Support.

Bonnaroo Receives Award from the State
June 28, 2010
The State of Tennessee has presented a major award to Bonnaroo. Bonnaroo is the massive music and arts festival that takes place each June in Manchester. The event draws some 100-thousand fans and workers to Coffee County.
At a specially held ceremony in Manchester, Commissioner Jim Fyke presented Bonnaroo with the Excellence in Parks and Recreation Award. In 2009, Bonnaroo addressed product consumption, education and outreach, waste management and energy consumption in a comprehensive plan to reduce waste produced for this recreational event. Thirty-three percent of the waste produced by the festival (by weight) was diverted from the landfill. This includes 81.49 tons of commingled recycling, 19.07 tons of scrap metal, 27.18 tons of cardboard, three tons of cooking oil, and 30 tons of compost totaling nearly 161 tons diverted from the landfill. This waste diversion, combined with education and outreach promoting sustainability, locally sourced products, onsite composting and environmentally friendly purchasing, lead to the highest amount of materials recycled in the 9-year history of the festival.
New in 2009, Bonnaroo provided reusable water bottles for attendees to refill with free filtered water from on-site wells. Bonnaroo also retired 900 metric tons of carbon dioxide, accounting fro and off setting all emissions generated from the festival.

The price of crude oil closed $1.69 more than last week after the first named storm of the season, Alex, was announced and created concern among investors that it could disrupt oil production in the Gulf of Mexico. Crude oil closed Friday at $78.86 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
The euro also gained in strength against the dollar late last week and helped give crude oil quick boost in price by making crude more appealing to foreign investors.
"When a named storm is announced that could possibly affect oil production, it’s very common to see the price of crude oil increase as a response," said Jessica Brady, manager, AAA Public Relations. "Retail gas prices will increase slightly this week before the Independence Day weekend. Consumers can expect to see retail gas prices between $2.70 and $2.80 during the holiday weekend."
The national average price of unleaded regular gasoline is $2.75 per gallon, reflecting a two-cent increase from last week. Florida’s average price is $2.69, a one-cent increase; Georgia’s average price is $2.63, reflecting a four-cent increase; and Tennessee’s is $2.58, reflecting a three-cent decrease from last week, respectively. A check of gas in Murfreesboro shows some outlets are offering $2.47 per gallon regular gas.

Islamic Center holds Open House on Mosque
June 26, 2010
An outpouring of support for the Murfreesboro Islamic Center at their open house on Saturday the 26th. The parking lot was filled past capacity, and among media guests, the numerous others included several respected professors, former city council candidate Thomas Connor-Moss,
a former Lutheran pastor,
and candidates for state representative.
The walls were adorned with letters and emails from Rutherford citizens lending their voices in favor of the proposed contruction, the plans of which were openly on display throughout the room. And no one has been more confused about the recent public backlash than the center’s leaders, who as it turns out, are deeply involved in helping the community, non-Muslims included. Curiously absent? The opposition to construction of the new Islamic Center, who in large failed to show up to what, in truth, was a party held for them.

Later the cones were removed, and all was back to normal with the parking lot filled with customers.
