Sheriff's Deputy Lawson Royal was not injured when a hit-and-run driver T-boned his patrol car at 11:21 p.m. Sunday on Puckett Creek Crossing at Fortress Boulevard, said Sheriff Robert Arnold.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Andrew Troxel reported Deputy Lawson was driving westbound and a car driven by Shelby Strong, 28, of Honey Tree Drive turned in front of him. Deputy Royal tried to avoid the crash but her car struck the driver's side of the patrol car.

Deputy Lawson's patrol car went off the road hitting a tree while Strong kept driving, the trooper reported. Sheriff's deputies located Strong.

"She stated that she did not see the patrol unit and after the crash, she stopped but did not see the other vehicle off the roadway so she went home because she was shaken and upset," Trooper Troxel reported.

Trooper Troxel issued citations to Strong for failure to provide due care and leaving the scene of a property damage crash.

Sheriff Arnold said Deputy Lawson was responding to an emergency call when his vehicle was struck.

"He's very lucky it wasn't in the driver's side door and it didn't hurt him," Sheriff Arnold said. "Leaving the scene when you know you've hit a patrol car, that's just not smart."
