Earthquakes in Tennessee

November 17, 2008

Since May of this year, there have been approximately 30-earthquakes reported to the East of Murfreesboro. Some of the areas that have reported quakes include Maryville, TN, Dunlap, TN, Etowah, TN just to name a few. Not to worry though, no earthquake has registered at more then 2.5 in magnitude. The closest one to Murfreesboro was in Pikeville, Tennessee. To the west of Rutherford County, the Earthquake Research Center of Memphis, TN suggest that over 80-quakes have been reported since August. Most of those were on the Tennessee - Missouri border.

I checked this morning with the Earthquake Research Center and they confirmed “NO” - there was not an earthquake in Rutherford County. However, there was one in the area of Greenback, Tn. It registered at 1.1 in magnitude. This is in an area where small quakes occur on a regular basis. It is about 27-miles SW of Knoxville, TN. There have been 30-earthquakes in that area since June 21st of this year.

There was also an earthquake on 12/18/08 near the West Tennessee border in Blytheville, AR and in Portageville, MO. Both were smaller then “2″ in magnitude. Again, that is an area where they occur on a regular basis.

I do not know what happened but i think i might have felt a small earthquake as something big seemed to shake my house about 5:44 am on 2-28-09 in Dickson, Tn. The only reason i think it might have been a quake is that normally when something happens if does not seem to last as long as this did. If i had been asleep i would have never know about it but being awake early like this i could not help but feel it.

Kevin, no events seem to have happened in TN on Feb 28th. The USGS records events all over the world and has no record for anything we could have felt locally. You can always go to their sight and find exact location and size of earthquakes.
