Engineers Gather In 'Boro September 17th and 18th

More than 300 professional engineers and their guests from across Tennessee will gather in Murfreesboro, Thursday and Friday, September 17th and 18th for the combined Tennessee Engineers' Conference of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee (ACEC), the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE), and the Tennessee Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The annual conference will be at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Convention Center.

Tennessee Speaker of the House Beth Harwell will be the keynote speaker on Friday (9/17/2015) at the Tennessee Engineering Foundation Luncheon. Harwell represents the 56th District, which includes a part of Davidson County, and was elected by her colleagues to serve as Speaker of the House. Directly prior to this, she served as House Commerce Committee Chairwoman and as House Republican Caucus Whip. Harwell holds a PhD from Vanderbilt University. The TEF Luncheon benefits the Tennessee MATHCOUNTS competition, K-12 STEM activities and engineering scholarships. Among other guest speakers are Paul Degges, PE, TDOT Deputy Commissioner; Tisha Calabrese Benton, TDEC Director Water Resources; Mike Gallik, Nissan North America; and Hal Balthrop, PE and Laura Reinbold, PE, Architects' and Engineers' Licensing Board.

The 2015-2016 officers of ACEC, ASCE and TSPE will be installed during the conference, including those from Middle Tennessee:

  • ACEC will induct engineers Amy Spann, PE, EnSafe Inc. as President Elect; Charlie Smith, PE, Barge Waggoner Sumner & Cannon, Inc.; and Steve Field, PE, Stantec Consulting Services, Inc., as ACEC National Director. Chuck Saunders, PE, Energy Land and Infrastructure, LLC, serves as Past President.
  • ASCE will induct Nashville engineers Ashely Thomas Smith, PE, M ASCE, Stantec Consulting Services, Inc., as President-Elect, and Ted A. Kniazewycz, P.E., M.ASCE, Gresham, Smith and Partners, as Treasurer.
  • TSPE will induct middle Tennessee engineers Janey Camp, PhD, PE , Vanderbilt University, as President-Elect; Craig Parker, PE, Gresham, Smith and Partners, as Vice President; Paul Kelly, PE, Aerospace Testing Alliance, as Treasurer; and Randal Braker, PE, Duck River Utility Commission, as Past President.

The meeting agenda includes sessions on a variety of engineering topics including GIS, stream restoration, ethics, risk management, and multiple case studies and in-depth project analysis.
