The preliminary investigation shows that Elrod was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed on his 2003 Suzuki motorcycle at 8:30 p.m. when a 2008 Honda Civic, driven by Ciara Bryant, 21, merged into Elrod's lane. Due to the motorcycle's excessive speed, Elrod struck the Civic and was thrown off the motorcycle. The impact caused the Honda to spin out of control and strike the guardrail. Elrod was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died. Bryant, of Ooltewah, Tennessee, was treated and released
According to witnesses, Elrod appeared to be racing a white sedan prior to the crash.

The primary contributing factor to the crash appears to be speeding on the part of Elrod. Charges are not anticipated against Bryant.
