U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement regarding his vote in favor of unemployment benefits for Tennesseans:

“Right now, Tennessee is suffering from the highest unemployment rate we’ve had since 1987,” Alexander said. “This measure could provide up to thirteen additional weeks of unemployment benefits to workers in Tennessee who have lost their jobs for reasons outside of their control, giving them more time to find new jobs during this tough economic time.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Tennessee’s unemployment rate is currently at 7.2 percent, which (along with Ohio) is the 7th highest in the country.

The Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2008 (H.R. 6867) passed the Senate by a vote of 89-6. It passed the House of Representatives last month and now goes to the president for his signature.

An unidentified 22-year-old Salt Lake City, Utah man has been charged with felony aggravated assault for slicing up another man with a meat cleaver he wore around his neck when they got into a fight last week. The victim claims the suspect called his girlfriend, quote, “bad names,” so he tossed a soda on the suspect. The man responded by taking a meat cleaver he wore as a necklace and swinging it at the victim, connecting with his face, arm and chest. The victim required 65 stitches to close his wounds. It’s unclear where the incident took place.

The autumn season brings football, colorful leaves, crisp, cool weather and wonderful holidays. One of the favorite times of years for many families is Thanksgiving and being a participant in a wonderful Thanksgiving meal. This is the traditional time of year when families, neighbors, and friends will gather and share food, laughter, and happiness. This holiday is an American favorite and you cannot mention it without immediately thinking of turkey, ham, pies, dressing, salads, cranberries, and other special dishes. Today’s cooks can find luscious new twists on old recipes as well as elegant new dishes to create on sites like www.epicurious.com.
The origins of the Thanksgiving meal can be traced back to the days of the Pilgrims. The New World at that time was still alien and often hostile to the Europeans who had not long come to settle and colonize the land. The weather could be bitter and cold and farming was being done by trial and error. Even wild animals would prove to be extremely hard to catch. It was the Native Americans who came to the aid of these new settlers and shared food with them.
These were also the people who befriended the new colonists and taught them how to catch fish and trap wild animals for food. The Native Americans also taught them how to live off the land by planting crops and harvesting berries, nuts, and edible plants. The very first Thanksgiving was not the bounty-laden tables that we so often see today, but the food was healthy and prepared and shared by friends and family members. The horn of plenty is a common symbol and decoration for Thanksgiving and it symbolizes that food is a wonderful thing for everyone to give thanks for and to share with others.
Some cooks go all out at this time of year to create elaborate meals and others will share cooking chores with other family members or have potluck dinners. Regardless of the type of meal that is created, there is always fun and enjoyment as the dishes are put together and prepared. Kitchen cooks who are younger or have little experience sometimes have trepidation and nervous moments as they try to prepare multiple dishes at one time. Now is a great time to be thankful for the wonders of technology and the great advances that have been made for cooks.
You and your family can express your thanks for your blessings and enjoy the wonderful meal that you are now able to create with the assistance of kitchen technology. Today you can make sure that the turkey and ham are cooked to the right temperature with digital oven thermometers. These are small and inexpensive wonders that can make sure you never serve undercooked or overdone meat again.
Delightful pastries and pies can be whipped up with marvelous new mixers that are programmable for any type chore. No longer is there any reason for someone to try to guess at measurements. Cooks now have high-tech kitchen implements that let them measure any fraction of an amount that is required.
There are even websites like www.dvo.com where you can find cooking software programs that will provide you with step-by-step instructions for any new recipes that you want to try. Today any cook can use modern techniques and great kitchen gadgets to produce a complete and delicious Thanksgiving meal that will be sure to impress all of their guests.

From FactMonster.Com

The word stock simply refers to a supply. You may have a stock of T-shirts in your closet, or a stock of pencils in your desk. In the financial market, stock refers to a supply of money that a company has raised. This supply comes from people who have given the company money in the hope that the company will make their money grow.

A market is a public place where things are bought and sold. The term “stock market” refers to the business of buying and selling stock. The stock market is not a specific place, though some people use the term “Wall Street”-the main street in New York City’s financial district-to refer to the U.S. stock market in general.

If a company wants to grow-maybe build more factories, hire more people, or develop new products-it needs money. It could get a loan from a bank. But then it would owe money. By issuing stock, a company can raise money without going into debt. People who buy the stock are giving the company the money it needs to grow.

Not every company can issue stock. A business owned by one person (a proprietorship) or a few people (a partnership) cannot issue stock. Only a business corporation can issue stock. A corporation has a special legal status. Like a school, its existence does not depend on the people who run it. Under the law it is separate from the people associated with it, and has special legal rights and responsibilities as well as its own unique name.

Owning stock in a company means owning part of that company. Each part is known as a share. If a company has issued 100 shares of stock, and you bought one, you own 1% of that company. People who own stock are called stockholders, or shareholders.

Stockholders hope the company will earn money as it grows. If a company earns money, the stockholders share the profits. Over time, people usually earn more from owning stock than from leaving money in the bank, buying bonds, or making other investments.

When the price of a particular stock rises, that stock is said to be “up,” meaning up in price. When the price falls, the stock is said to have gone “down.” The terms “up” and “down” are also used to describe the rise and fall of the market as a whole.

As a company makes money, the value of its stock goes up. For instance, pretend you bought some shares of stock for $10 each. Since you share the company’s profits, if it does well the shares might later be worth $15 each. You could then sell your stock and make $5 on each share. If the company loses money, however, you would also share its losses. Those $10 shares might each be worth $3 if the company fell on hard times.

Two months until BARACK OBAMA’s inauguration and you’ve decided to join in the fun. Getting to Washington’s not the problem. It’s where you’ll be staying that’s causing the headaches.

All the hotels and motel rooms in the region have been snatched up, leaving potential visitors the option of either sleeping in their cars or looking at places a good distance away from D.C.

Apparently, there are plenty of folks with their own homes who’ll be more than happy to provide lodging at a fairly steep price.

For instance, ROCHELLE EDWARDS of Woodlawn, Maryland has a two-bedroom townhouse and would be willing to rent a room to people in desperate need of a place to stay. As long as they have lots of cash, of course.

There are plenty of others who’ll be glad to do the same. But Allstate insurance agent CJ RIDGELY says if you do rent out a room or two, make sure to do it only with a contract that acts as protection for both renters and guests.

Ridgely says the contract should contain all the terms of usage, including how many people will be staying and for how long, not to mention the items they’ll be bringing.

The agent recommends checking things like heating equipment, fireplaces and smoke alarms and consider adding a carbon monoxide detector.

Renters should also be cognizant of conditions outside the home. Since it’ll be January, all walkways should be free of snow and ice.

It’s ALMOST official, the Murfreesboro City Council has voted to expand the current firework ban in the city limits. The new ban will make it illegal to possess bottle rockets, mortar type fireworks, re-loadable mortar type fireworks and mortar rockets. The proposal will also mean that it is illegal to sale motor type fireworks as well as shoot them. The council just needs to pass the new rules twice more before it becomes a new enforceable ordinance. Once passed, it will likely start on or before New Years Eve. Now keep in mind, these new rules do not apply to professional firework shows and they do not apply to residents living outside the city limits.
