Fire Department Get $63K Grant
July 31, 2008
The Murfreesboro Fire Department will receive a Homeland Security grant totaling $63,277. The money is to be used for operations and safety equipment. Sixth District U. S. Congressman Bart Gordon said, “The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program provides opportunities for local fire departments to acquire much-needed equipment and vehicles.” Murfreesboro Fire Department Coordinator Laurie Alsup noted that the funds will be used to purchase thermal imaging cameras and rapid intervention equipment, which includes ropes, pulleys, search kits and rotary rescue saws. She commented, “The thermal imaging cameras have color screens that can read up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This feature will allow firefighters to determine dangerous fire situations before they occur and locate downed firefighters and possible victims.” Currently the Murfreesboro Fire Department has four thermal imaging cameras. With an additional seven cameras, they will be able to provide each fire district with a camera. And if you didn’t know, Murfreesboro is one of the few cities in the nation to have a fire department with an ISO rating of 2. That translates into savings on your fire insurance.
