The 80th Attorney General of the United States, Alberto R. Gonzales, will be the guest speaker at the quarterly Rutherford County GOP Luncheon at moon this coming Wednesday (3/1/2017). He was appointed and confirmed as Attorney General in February 2005 under the George W. Bush administration, and served in this position until 2007.

"We are delighted to have such a prominent and distinguished law professor visit us," said Rutherford County GOP Chairman Donna Barrett.

"In addition to being US Attorney General, professor Gonzales has quite a track record in law, both in the private sector and the public sector where he served as a Justice on the Texas Supreme Court, Texas Secretary of State, and General Counsel to the Governor of Texas and later Counsel to the President of the United States," Chairman Barrett said.

Professor Gonzales is currently the Dean of Belmont University College of Law in Nashville, where he teaches Constitutional Law, Separation of Powers, National Security Law and First Amendment Law. He often writes opinion pieces for national newspapers and appears on national news programs. He was ranked one of "Newsmax's 50 Most Influential Latino Republicans" in 2016. His work in the Hispanic community and his achievements as a role model have also earned him recognition as Hispanic American of the Year by HISPANIC Magazine and one of The 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America by TIME Magazine. Gonzales is also a member of the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions and he serves on the board of directors for the United Way of Metropolitan Nashville and the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee. Previously he was an appointee of Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam to the Governor's Commission for Judicial Appointments and the Governor's Management Fellows Executive Committee.

"Given recent political events and presidential executive orders on issues such as immigration, we look forward to hearing what Gonzales has to say on this and other hot button issues," Chairman Barrett added.

"These luncheons seek to inform and educate people on specific topics and issues, and the visit by professor Gonzales reaffirms this. We are privileged to have such a distinguished man come and speak to our community," she added.

The luncheon takes place at DoubleTree Hotel on 1850 Old Fort Parkway in Murfreesboro, March 1, 2017. Doors open at 11:30 AM and the event starts at Noon and lasts for one hour.
