Gilbert Wins City Schools Director Chair

December 3, 2009

1203092027 The Murfreesboro City Board of Education has named Dr. Linda Arms Gilbert as the new Director of Schools,
following 2 days of candidate interviews earlier this week.  Gilbert was selected unanimously in the first round of voting, with all seven board members putting their support behind her.  Each board member commented on receiving hundreds of emails from individuals in favor of Gilbert over opponent Dr. Lela A. Bridges, who board member Susan Andrews took a moment to also recognize as an outstanding educator.  This marks the first time in Murfreesboro history that a search has been mounted for a new Director.  Dr. Gilbert was thrilled, and is anxious to start work right away.  Board of Education Chair Mary Wade will now enter into negotiating terms of employment, including a start date for the new director.

Gilbert told WGNS News that there were some projects at MTSU that must get underway before she moves to the new position, however her plans are to be with the Murfreesboro City School system in January. She invited the WGNS Action Line radio show to go on the streets with her when she takes office. We’ll do the morning talk radio show from inside a city school bus as it makes its round.

I am so proud of our school board for promoting local people. Others act as if there is no talent here at home and go out of their way to hire others. Dr. Gilbert was at Mitchell Neilson when my son was a student there. She is super and is so involved in help our community. We have a committed leader in charge of our city schools now. Also, who is the person in the picture with Dr. Gilbert?

I used to work in the city system with Linda. She is the most compasionate, caring and professional educator I have ever known. Local schools were just elevated several notches with the appointment of Dr. Gilbert. Good luck Linda!

I was enjoying the Sanders Family Christmas at the Center for the Arts when I got the WGNS text message about Dr. Gilbert’s appointment. I excitedly show it to the person next to me, and suddenly everyone was passing the word on. We are so excited about how much good Linda Gilbert will bring to our children.

I am glad to see the City School Board made the correct decision! I think they should balk at paying any more money to the so called “Search Firm” and NEVER hire a search firm again. The City has many HR Professionals who can conduct an adequate search!

I agree with you David, we have talented LOCAL people that need to be promoted. Dr. Gilbert was the best choice. Unfortunately, in today’s society if you do not have a good paper trail, there are people who would cry “foul” if a thorough nationwide search was not made. Thank goodness, the local school board had the last say and they made the right choice.

What a waste of money. The board knew who they would hire the entire time.

Got something to say?
