Governor Bill Haslam has brought back the electric chair. The reason he signed a bill into law allowing for the deadly chair to be used is in case prisons are unable to obtain the drugs used to execute an inmate on death row by way of lethal injection.
Several drugs used for lethal injections have become quite scarce since a European-led boycott of drug sales for executions.
Currently, there are 21 offenders who were sentenced to death for crimes specifically committed in Middle Tennessee. Another 53-inmates on death row are from East or West Tennessee. No death row inmates are from Rutherford County at this time.
