A convicted felon who is not allowed to own a gun was arrested in Murfreesboro after a traffic stop revealed he was indeed armed.

Columbia, Tennessee resident Carlos Elder was pulled over after failing to come to a proper stop on Battle Avenue in Murfreesboro. When questioned by police during the stop, the 42 year old admitted to possessing a small amount of crack cocaine. Elder also had a crack pipe in his pocket, according to a police report.

After receiving permission to search the vehicle, officers found an unmarked pill bottle that contained over 40 Oxycodone pills and a Kel-Tec 380 handgun in the trunk.

Police then questioned who owned the 1998 Lincoln that Elder was driving. The mancalled his girlfriend to meet him at the scene of the traffic stop because she had the bill of sale in her possession. After she responded and showed police the bill of sale, police seized the car. Officers also seized two cellphones in the vehicle that allegedly belonged to Elder.

The Columbia man was charged with being a felon in the possession of a firearm, felony possession of a schedule 2 drug and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is scheduled to appear in a Rutherford County courtroom on February 1, 2017. As of Monday afternoon, he was still behind bars in the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center.
