Serving on a Disaster Action Team
The Heart of Tennessee Chapter prepares for and responds to disasters 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, through its Disaster Action Team (D.A.T.). Always on call, D.A.T. volunteers provide disaster relief to meet the emergency needs of victims of house fires, storms, tornadoes, floods, transportation accidents, and man-made disasters. Assistance needed by victims is evaluated by case workers and may include shelter, food, clothing, emotional support, household furnishings, prescription medication, and other critically needed items.
DAT TRAINEE POSITION DESCRIPTION
Location: Heart of Tennessee Chapter
Position Title: Disaster Action Team (DAT) Trainee
Purpose: Assist Red Cross in delivering mission to provide relief to victims of disaster and help prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies
Key Responsibilities:
-Willingness to support Red Cross Mission -Provide a timely response to disaster incident’s in your chapter/unit’s under the direction and assistance of a DAT Responder, Lead, or Captain. Respond to disaster scenes as assigned by DAT Lead within specific time constraints. Provide Red Cross services directly or indirectly to disaster clients by providing emergency assistance such as food, clothing, and shelter .Operate within appropriate established fiscal controls, consulting supervisor. Process appropriate forms, reports, and records on timely basis. Effectively communicate availability and schedule needs to DAT Lead .Participate in DAT meetings .Become familiar with Red Cross policies, procedures, and regulations as found in relevant ARC 3000 series documents, particularly ARC 3045 (Family Services)
Relationships: Working with chapter/unit disaster employees and volunteers
Qualifications:
-Willingness to respond to disasters according to team rotation.
-Ability to handle crisis situations, think clearly, and act appropriately as well as handling other people in crisis with compassion
-Strong interpersonal skills and ability to be team player
-Ability to provide own transportation to disaster sites
Training:
-Orientation to American Red Cross.
-Introduction to Disaster Services.
-Family Services: Providing Emergency Assistance.
-Damage Assessment.
-First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
-Recommended: First Call/Client Interview Workshop, Mass Care, Shelter Operations,
-Public Affairs, Serving the Diverse Community, Working Together-Paid and Volunteer -Staff Relationships

Chapter/Unit Disaster Chair and/or Director or DAT Lead/Captain
Reports to: DAT Captain
Length of Appointment:
Minimum of 1 year, renewable. Once trained may remain active as long as required training is updated.
Time Commitment:
As determined by chapter’s geography and DAT Team structure
