Hippie Hill, which sits on a 40-acre tract of land in Rutherford County near the Cannon County line, has been rezoned as a Hostel property by the Board of Zoning Appeals. A Hostel is an establishment that provides inexpensive food and lodging for a specific group of people, such as travelers and the homeless (See pictures here).

A man who goes by the nickname of “Hippie Tom” (Tom Maddox) owns the land in question. Scott Walker talked to Tom while visiting the campsite…

Maddox and others on the property help homeless persons find jobs while offering them shelter at night. The shelter may be as primitive as a tent or the shell of a 1960’s school bus.

With the new zoning, any future structures on the land will have to be equipped to meet fire codes. Keep in mind, there is no running water or electricity on the property, unless a generator is turned on.

This past week, Board of Zoning Appeals members Keith Bratcher and Joe Crowell were against the idea of approving the property as a Hostel. Other members completely disagreed and showed support of Hippie Hill.
