“Two early morning fires were likely the result of homeless dwellers trying to stay warm on a cold night,” said Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department Assistant Fire Marshal Carl Peas.

Around 5:00 am Friday, Murfreesboro Fire & Rescue Department was dispatched to the corner of Steel Tech Drive and Public Drive located near Mi-Tech Steel. Workers from Mi-Tech Steel called stating that smoke was coming from a structure across the street. On the way to the fire on Public, the Shift Commander noticed a fire at another location near Mi-Tech. A small metal shed was on fire behind a Porter Street home.

Units from MFRD’s District 1, along with Rescue 2, responded to the scenes. Engine 1 put out the shed fire on Porter, while Engine 15 extinguished the fire in an abandoned house on Public. “Neither fire was very significant, but it could have been worse,” Peas said. No one was injured in either incident.

Both scenes were turned over to City of Murfreesboro Building and Codes Department.
