By an overwhelming vote, the Rutherford County Commission tabbed former Commissioner Jeff Jordan to fill a vacant seat on the County School Board on Thursday night. Robert Rickman has more...

VERBATIM:

Jordan, received 16 votes from commissioners Thursday to take the Zone 6 board position left open when David Nipper won election to the County Commission in August. He had opted not to run for re-election to the commission this year,

Echell Eady, an MTSU academic advisor, collected four votes, and Garey Eakes, a retired York VA Medical Center employee, received one vote.

Jordan told commissioners."I'm ready to start work on school board business, and I'm as up to date as anyone. The students, staff and teachers in the system will be my top priority in this position, and they will not be far from my thoughts in everything I do."

Jordan served as chairman of the commission's Health and Education Committee for five years and in that position became well-versed on the school board's budget, which is now upwards of $308 million to fund a system with some 42,000 students. Robert Rickman, WGNS news.

The retired teacher said he felt prepared to start work on the budget immediately and pointed out that it is a difficult task for the commission to decide how much funding to provide for a burgeoning system that has added about 700 students already this year.
