Mental illness is alive in Rutherford County with problems that cover the gamete. Some residents are battling depression while others are up against bi-polar disorder or schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia can include hallucinations or voices that seem real. Reports indicate the illness is rarely understood by those who don't suffer from it, which makes it more confusing for the outside world to comprehend.

To highlight the problems that go along with schizophrenia, a Murfreesboro woman recently attempted suicide because she could not make the voices that she was hearing stop. The resident called for help several hours after drinking a bottle of lighter fluid. Evidently, the lighter fluid made the woman extremely sick as opposed to killing her.

According to a police report, the woman who is in her thirties, drank the fluid on Sunday morning and later called for help. She was transported to the hospital by ambulance where she is still recovering.

Drinking lighter fluid causes extreme pain in the abdominal area and throat. It affects the kidneys and bladder and the victim often notices decreased urine output. The lighter fluid also causes low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, hallucinations, headaches and more. Internal organ damage can continue for several weeks after ingesting lighter fluid, according to U.S. National Library of Medicine.
