Melvin Daniels, who called Rutherford County his home for most of his 62 years, passed away on Saturday. The longtime county schools educator and local football standout retired just a few years ago from the school system. He was a former principal at La Vergne High School. Most recently, he retired as an assistant at Stewarts Creek Middle and a P-E teacher at Holloway High.

Daniels was a standout football player for Murfreesboro Central High School and graduated in 1970. From there, he went on to MTSU on scholarship. He played professional football in the World Football League for the Shreveport Steamers (picture left). He returned in the 1980's to teach English and served as an assistant football coach at Oakland High School, which won the state championship in 1984.
