MOVIES UNDER THE STARS June 1 - July 31, 2010 This is a FREE service of your Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department. This community event began in 1947, long before home video. Back then, Hollis Harris made candid 16 millimeter movies of people in this community. Before the major attraction, Mr. Harris showed the “home movies”. That’s how it got started. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy the FREE movies. You can also purchase refreshments at the “movie trailer”. All movies are rated G or PG. Every Wednesday 10AM-Noon READ TO SUCCEED offers free JOB SKILL CLASSES in the Myrtle Glaton Lord Library at the Patterson Community Center. Improve your skills in searching for jobs in the newspaper and with the internet. You will be taught how to create effective resumes and improve your interview skills. In addition, the class will teach proper business etiquete and how to follow-up after the interview. As the New Year of 1947 was rung-in, Murfreesboro and Rutherford County suddenly entered the electronic age. At 10PM on December 31, 1946, this community’s first radio station signed-on. It was built on the principal of being a GOOD NEIGHBOR. In fact, the G N S in the station’s call sign stands for Good Neighbor Station. That slogan shapes the way WGNS reports news, promotes itself and the way our staff is personally involved in this community. WGNS really is your radio station. Tue. (June , 2011) 7PM MIDDLE TENNESSEE CIVIL WAR ROUNDTABLE meets at Bradley Academy Historic Museum (415 S. Academy Street). The local group meets every month on the THIRD TUESDAY at Bradley Academy. Membership: $15 per year for individuals; $20 for families. Each meeting includes a CIVIL WAR SHOW AND TELL segment. Both exit # 75 Medical Center Parkway and exit #78 Old Fort Parkway take you to the new Farmers Market. The Lane Agri-Park is just down the street from Sam’s and next to the PAWS animal adoption service. This service is sponsored by the Rutherford County Agricultural Extension Service (phone 615-898-7710). It is held 6:00-11:00AM every Tuesday and Friday morning (first Friday in June through last Friday in October).

Fri. (June 25, 2010) 12 Noon LABOR OF LOVE CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP meets on the last Friday of each month. This group offers compassion and advice for caregivers of seniors with dementia, the disabled and chronically ill. Contact Elbert Dyer for more information (615-848-2550).

Fri. (June , 2011) 5-9pm MURFREESBORO HOT ROD CLUB invites you to their Cruise-In at The Avenue of Murfreesboro (Belk’s parking lot). Step back to the rock’n roll era with DJ music, giveaways, prizes and fun. The Club requests a donation of $1 that will go to local charities. Now Five Blood Drives Weekly The Heart of Tennessee Chapter of the American Red Cross has renovated and enlarged its blood center at 836 Commercial Court (around the corner from UPS). The same local staff is now handling all of these new blood drives. In addition, Murfreesboro is now equipped to service platelet aphaeresis donations.
