A celebration of American workers! The holiday originated in 1882 as the Central Labor Union (of New York City) sought to create “a day off for the working citizens”. Congress made Labor Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1894, two months after the May Day Riots of 1894. All fifty states have made Labor Day a state holiday. Traditionally, Labor Day is celebrated by most Americans as the symbolic end of the summer. Notice: There is NO GARBAGE PICKUP in Murfreesboro on Monday (Labor Day). Monday’s pickup has been moved to Tuesday, and Tuesday’s collection will be Wednesday.

Sat. (Sept. 18, 2010) 6AM-8PM Enjoy a full day of fun at the Annual La VERGNE OLD TIMER’S DAY at the Veteran’s Memorial Park. Start the day with a great country ham breakfast served by the Rescue Squad, along with a 5K race and fun run. The full-day of family activities includes the Old Timer’s Parade, plus organizations with booths that tell of La Vergne’s history, live music, and more. Local artists and craftsmen will have booths to make their creations available. Plus, Bryan Barrett will be broadcasting “live” from Old Timer’s Day over the WGNS Good Neighbor network of stations. Tour The New MIDDLE TENNESSEE MEDICAL CENTER today!
Sat. (Sept. 25, 2010) all day The public is encouraged to visit the new MIDDLE TENNESSEE MEDICAL CENTER today and take a tour of the new hospital. The first day of operation for the new hospital at Medical Center Parkway will be Saturday, October 2, 2010. Here are some interesting facts about our new hospital: The new hospital’s campus at 68.5 acres is more than four times larger than MTMC’s current campus where the hospital was established in 1927. You could stretch the total linear feet of electrical wiring from Murfreesboro to Houston, TX. That’s 738 miles! When the final figures are tabulated, the project is expected to cost $267 million. In addition to the hospital facility, the DePaul Medical Office Building is on the site.. The hospital will have 286-beds with shelled space for additional beds as the community grows. The new hospital is located in this city’s beautiful Gateway Project on Medical Center Parkway, between Thompson Lane and the Stones River. Now Five Red Cross Blood Drives Weekly
The Heart of Tennessee Chapter of the American Red Cross has renovated and enlarged its blood center at 836 Commercial Court (around the corner from UPS). The same local staff is now handling all of these new blood drives. In addition, Murfreesboro is now equipped to service platelet pheresis donations. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium on Greenland Drive and takes you through historic downtown Murfreesboro. Pre-registration: $20 for ages 14-59 (Family Run-Pack for 4=$70 (all ages); $18 for ages 13 and younger or 60+. You must sign-up before November 20th to take advantage of the lower entry fees.
