The Fortner family moved to Murfreesboro in the 1960's when Bruce was a teenager. His parents, originally from Indiana, found Murfreesboro to be a growing city and decided to open a pizza shop as opposed to remaining in the construction industry, which is what Bruce's father Robert did prior to the restaurant business.

The first Sir Pizza in Murfreesboro opened in the Jackson Heights Plaza in 1966 next to the movie theater. It wasn't until 1990 or so that Robert's children took over the Sir Pizza restaurant chain. Bruce Fortner supervised the restaurants where he started his career at age 14.

Bruce's parents Robert and Nona Fortner passed away in years 2000 and 2016, respectively.
