Longtime Veterans Day Emcee Spencer Lane Dixon Dies

Our community lost a patriotic leader Monday morning. Spencer Lane Dixon passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and two sons.

Spencer was a 1965 graduate of Messick High School in Memphis. He also attended the University of Memphis there in the Bluff City.

However, he is remembered by most in this area for emceeing the Veterans Day Tributes on the Murfreesboro square. Spencer was often a guest on WGNS, and in 2013 he reminisced about working with the local group . . .

Prior to retiring, Spencer was Chief of Voluntary Services with the VA here in Murfreesboro. One of his strengths was getting people together. He came up with the idea of having a picnic each year for ex POW's. There were only nine when it began, but it grew to one of the largest POW gatherings in Tennessee with over a hundred in attendance.

Dixon was a sergeant in the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam with a service dog. On one of the WGNS broadcasts, he shared the story of how the dog saved his life . . .

Funeral Arrangements

Visitation with the family of Retired U.S. Army Sergeant Lane Spencer Dixon, Jr. will be this Sunday (3/22/2015) from 4:00 in the afternoon until 6:00 in the evening at Woodfin Funeral Chapel, 1488 Lascassas Pike in Murfreesboro. Funeral services to follow at 6:00PM Sunday evening.
