Man Acted Like He Was in Military, But Was Not

November 12, 2009

Veteran’s Day is a good time to remember the importance of telling the truth at your high school reunion. Thirty-nine-year-old Steven Burton was caught impersonating a member of the military last month after he dressed as a Marine at his 20th high school reunion in Martinez, California.Burton, who actually works in finance, got in trouble when a real Navy commander from his class suspected Burton was lying about his decorated past. She took a picture with Burton and sent it to the FBI. An investigation soon uncovered photos of him wearing his uniform several other places. Burton also posted blog entries about his tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, even though, in reality, he has about as much military experience as Cap’n Crunch. In addition to his uniform, Burton allegedly decked himself out with several medals, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Navy Cross.

Burton is expected to surrender Thursday in a Riverside, California court on charges of unauthorized wearing of military medals.
