Children living in troubled home

February 11, 2009

A sad story out of Smithville today. WJLE reported that several children were found in two separate homes living in unsanitary conditions. In one case, DeKalb County Sheriff Deputies arrested 34-year old Michael Eugene Evans and charged him with 2-counts of child neglect. In his home, Evans was found passed out on the couch with his two kids unattended. The children were ages 9-months and 10-years. Dog feces, cockroaches, and an unsafe kerosene heater were just a few of the things Deputies spotted when walking in the front door of the home.

In the second case, Deputies arrested 43-year old Steven Scott Wheeler and 37-year old Kimberly Diane Wheeler in Smithville. At their home, officers say an intoxicated man was trying to administer medication to the two children in the house. According to WLIJ radio, no word on who that man was. Steven Wheeler was however said to be passed out on a couch. A four and five year old were found living in the wheelers home. The same home where marijuana and an open container of Xanax were found. Cigarette buts were also discovered all over the floors of the home.
