The City of Murfreesboro announced today that Mike Browning has agreed to become the city’s new Public Information Officer. He will start the position within the Communications Department on June 16.
Browning comes with a wealth of experience in the field of communications, having been the Public Affairs Director for the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security for five years, serving as the primary spokesperson for the department with 1,800 employees; coordinating and distributing news release and media advisories; directing the development and implementation of the departmental website content, monthly newsletter, and the weekly Commissioner’s email; coordinating news conferences and media events to promote departmental activities; and acting as the communications liaison to the Governor’s Communications Office.
Browning most recently served as the Multimedia Video Content Specialist and Host of “Out of the Blue” for Middle Tennessee State University. Browning has an extensive background as a television news reporter and anchor for stations in Springfield, IL, Little Rock, AR, Tulsa, OK, West Hartford, CT, and WKRN News2 in Nashville, TN.

Anyone who has followed the tremendous growth of Murfreesboro in the last decade understands how exciting it is for me to be involved in communicating the growing services provided and people involved in such a great community,” said Browning. “I am looking forward to joining the communications team who makes it clear providing accurate and timely city information, promoting transparency, and engaging the public is a priority.”
An Illinois native, Browning has a Bachelor of Science degree in Radio and Television from Southern Illinois University, a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and is currently working on a Master’s in Public History at Middle Tennessee State University.
“Mike brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience,” said Communications Director Alan Bozeman, “We are extremely excited and pleased to have him join our team to enhance the communications we provide the community.”
Browning has been an adjunct professor at Middle Tennessee State University, Tulsa Community College, Millikin University, and an instructor at Richland Community College.
Additionally, he has won numerous professional awards for his reporting and television work and works as a volunteer for Stones River National Battlefield.
“There are many exciting things that happen everyday in the City of Murfreesboro. Mike has the experience, knowledge and skills to help tell that to our residents. We know he will help us engage our community in new and stronger ways,” said City Manager Rob Lyons.
