A Monroe Street woman reported to Murfreesboro Police she was the victim of a scam. She told Murfreesboro Police someone assumed the identity of a landlord, whom she attempted to rent a house from. She reported finding the home on CraigsList. When she contacted the purported landlord, named Steven Stroop, he made a request that she deemed questionable. She was instructed to mail a monetary deposit to him using a money gram money transfer. The victim decided to go to the home and she didn't see a for lease or for rent sign on the property. She also discovered one of the phone numbers Stroop provided was from Houston, Texas. The victim did not send money, but did provide some personal information, like address, phone number and social security number and reported to police she was worried her identity would be stolen. Authorities say these types of crimes are very hard to track. They encourage you to be careful in giving out your personal information.
