A Murfreesboro man is in the Williamson County Jail after an early Sunday (11/13/2016) morning standoff at Franklin's Embassy Suites Hotel.

Officers responded to the hotel around 5:30 Sunday morning, after Murfreesboro's Paul Briggs called Franklin police dispatch and made threats of mass violence inside the Embassy Suites Hotel.

The 26-year old male claimed to have a sniper rifle and explosives.

When arriving officers encountered Briggs in the hallway of the hotel, he rushed into his room where he barricaded himself for hours.

Hundreds of hotel patrons were evacuated from the property during the standoff.

The Franklin SWAT team set-up a perimeter around the hotel when they arrived before the sun came-up. Officers worked quickly with the hotel staff to direct guests to their vehicles, and away from the Embassy Suites.

Lieutenant Charles Warner reported that the Franklin Police SWAT Team took the lone suspect into custody around 1:30 Sunday afternoon.

Bomb technicians and munitions specialists completed a thorough search of the hotel and surrounding parking lot. Just before 3:00 o'clock, Franklin police gave the "all clear" for guests to return to the Embassy Suites.

Briggs, who has a long arrest record in Franklin, was charged with Filing a False Report (a Class-C Felony) and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He is being held in the Williamson County Jail on a $102,500 bond. He will appear in Williamson County Court at 1:00 o'clock this coming Thursday afternoon (11/17/2016).

In addition, Briggs was wanted on unrelated charges here in Rutherford County at the time of his arrest. Despite Briggs' claims and threat, no explosives or guns were found in his hotel room or car.
