Murfreesboro Mayor and City Council Debate in Murfreesboro Around the Corner

The Rutherford County Alumni Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. will host a candidate forum for the City Mayor and City Council candidates on March 18, 2014.

There are two candidates vying to be City Mayor. They are Shane McFarland and Ron Washington.

There are eight candidates contending for three seats on the City Council. They are Axl David, Madelyn Scales Harris, Candy Roberts Joyce, Rick LaLance, Brian Patterson, Jeff Rainwater, Stephen Shirley, and Doug Young.


The forum will be held at the Historic Rutherford County Courthouse located at 20 N. Public Square in Murfreesboro beginning at 6:00 pm. Tyson Smith of 92Q has been chosen as the moderator of the event, but the questions will be developed and chosen by the fraternity. Candidate responses will be timed and questions will not be provided to any candidates beforehand.

This event is being held in conjunction with the fraternity’s national program, “A Voteless People Is A Hopeless People”, which began in the 1930s. The program focuses on promoting political awareness and empowerment.


City Election Day is April 15. Early voting will take place between March 26 and April 10.
