Saint Thomas Health announced that its Saint Thomas Midtown and West Hospitals have each been named one of the Watson Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals of 2018, a recognition that speaks to the clinical and operational excellence of the heart programs at each hospital.

The Watson Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals study, formerly the Truven Health Analytics study, is an annual, objective, quantitative study that identifies the nation's best providers of cardiovascular care, based on publicly available data and a balanced look at clinical, operational, and financial performance metrics. The study is a part of the Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals program.

"At Saint Thomas Health, we are dedicated to excellence in every area of healthcare delivery," said Tim Adams, President and CEO of Saint Thomas Health. "Honors like this demonstrate our providers deliver both high quality and compassionate care that our patients deserve."

Saint Thomas Midtown and West Hospitals are the only Tennessee hospitals on the 50 Top Cardiovascular list this year.

Here in Murfreesboro, there is a St. Thomas Heart facility in the Seton Building on the campus of St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital.

Hospitals are compared against similar facilities in terms of size and teaching status. Compared to non-winning cardiovascular hospitals, the 2018 winners delivered better clinical outcomes while operating more efficiently, allowing for more affordable care for patients and purchasers of healthcare. Specifically the winning hospitals had significantly higher inpatient survival and higher 30-day survival for acute cases, fewer patients with complications, lower readmission rates and lower average length of stay, and less total cost per patient.

"Saint Thomas Heart has served as Tennessee's cardiac care program leader for more than 40 years, offering patients a comprehensive range of services, both heart-healthy care as well as the most innovative medical and surgical treatment options when needed," said Fahad Tahir, FACHE, President and CEO of Saint Thomas Midtown and West Hospitals. "This national recognition is a testament to an incredible group of physicians and clinicians who care for patients with daily discipline and clinical excellence, while propelling us to continue to bring new and innovative ways to care for our community into the future."

Saint Thomas Midtown and West Hospitals are two of five Ascension hospitals named in the Watson Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals of 2018. Other Ascension sites of care on the list include St. Vincent Hospital in Indiana, St. Vincent Heart Center in Indiana, and Providence-Providence Park Hospital in Michigan.

Saint Thomas Health is part of Ascension, the nation's largest Catholic and non-profit health system.
