New assistant director of the Murfreesboro Planning Department

Matthew Blomeley has been officially named the new assistant director of the City Planning Department. Blomeley had previously served as Principal Planner since 2006 and currently serves under Planning Director Gary Whitaker.

"Matthew has excelled in the City Planning Department which has seen tremendous growth in the number of residential and commercial development projects," said City Manager Rob Lyons. "Serving the demands of design professionals, developers, builders and residents effectively and efficiently as the City engages in the Murfreesboro 2035 comprehensive plan, the North Highland Avenue Study, the Historic Bottoms Study and the new Design Guidelines Steering Committee, requires great knowledge and expertise. We are grateful for his passion and commitment to our City."

Blomeley began his career with the City of Murfreesboro as a Planner in 2001 and was promoted to Principal Planner in 2006. From 2006 to 2014, his primary responsibility involved advising the Board of Zoning Appeals. In 2015, Blomeley began advising the Planning Commission and City Council on issues related to planning.

Blomeley's career in planning began in 2000 with the City of Albany, Georgia, before becoming a Planner in Murfreesboro in 2001.

Blomeley recently received certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (A.I.C.P.) The AICP is the American Planning Association's professional institute and the recognized leader in certifying professional planners and promoting ethical planning, professional development, planning education, and standards of practice. To become a certified planner, an APA member must meet requirements for education and experience and pass an examination https://www.planning.org/aicp/. A.I.C.P. certification is the only nationwide, independent verification of planners' qualifications.

Blomeley is a 2006 graduate of Leadership Rutherford and serves on the Board of Directors for Main Street Murfreesboro/Rutherford County. A Birmingham, Alabama native, Blomeley graduated Summa Cum laude from Auburn University in 1999 with a degree in Public Administration. He resides in Murfreesboro with his wife, Sarah, an associate professor of English at Belmont University in Nashville, 3-year-old son Nathan and daughter, Rose, who was born in April.
