Nissan is responding to an increase in demand for its all-electric LEAF by readying a third shift at the factory in Decherd, Tenn., where it makes the Nissan LEAF's electric motor.  Production of the LEAF at the Smyrna plant continues to run strong and with the increased shift in Decherd, even more will be manufactured in the future.

As reported in July, Nissan North America has sold more of its electric cars in the previous six months than it did all of last year. More than 98-hundred LEAFs were sold in the past six months.

A car that has no extras, like navigation, is now offered for a $199 a month lease. Company officials say moving production of the vehicles from Japan to the Smyrna plant also saved some money on shipping costs and unfavorable exchange rates.

On an interesting side note, LEAF is an acronym for Environmentally Friendly, Affordable Family Vehicle.
