You may not be thinking about Christmas right now, but the Oaklands Association is already in the holiday spirit. Explore historic homes in holiday splendor at the 31st Annual Oaklands Christmas Candlelight Tour of Homes slated for December 6, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. in Murfreesboro. The tour, sponsored by Franklin Synergy Bank, will feature private historic homes, a distinctive church, and the graceful Oaklands Mansion.
James Manning, Executive Director of Oaklands Association, said "The Tour of Homes has been an annual community tradition for over thirty years. We couldn't be more grateful to the home-owners, sponsors and volunteers who put the "fun" this fund-raising event. Begin your holiday season by experiencing the character and personality of these fine homes and their respective care-takers. Your ticket purchase supports education and preservation right here in our community."
The cornerstone of the tour is Oaklands Mansion, where you will be welcomed to the sprawling Italianate mansion by friendly guides in period attire. In 1860, Oaklands, situated on a plantation exceeding 1,500 acres was one of the most elegant homes in Tennessee. Following the Civil War, it deteriorated from a majestic mansion to virtual ruins and, in the 1950's, its very existence was threatened. Thankfully, the mansion was saved from the wrecking ball when a group of concerned ladies created Oaklands Association in 1959. Since then, the generosity of the community has provided for the restoration of Oaklands to its original splendor. By preserving the mansion and grounds, its unique history can be shared time and time again.
Come explore this lovingly restored mansion brought back to its former glory, as well as some of the lovely homes on East Main Street. The proceeds of the Candlelight Tour of Homes go toward the continuing preservation of this historic treasure. Admission is $12.50 per adult in advance; $15.00 per adult at the door, $5.00 per child ages 6-17 in advance or at the door, ages 5 and under are free. Tickets may be purchased in advance at www.oaklandsmuseum.org or at Oaklands' Museum Shop. On the night of the tour, tickets can be purchase at any home on the tour or at Oaklands' Museum Shop.
