The letter sent to parents stated:

Hello parents,

This is James Evans with Rutherford County Schools. The Tennessee Legislature has added a new offense to the zero tolerance statute and our school board has added the offense to our local policy, as required. We're sending you this message to notify you of the change because it is not listed in the student handbook and code of discipline.

You can also read the new policy on our website at www.rcschools.net or call our office at (615) 893-5812 if you have any questions.

The new statute adds the following offense to the zero tolerance policy:

"Any student who transmits by an electronic device any communication containing a credible threat to cause bodily injury or death to another student or school employee and the transmission of such threat creates actual disruptive activity at the school that requires administrative intervention shall be expelled for a period of not less than one (1) calendar year."

Again, if you have any questions about this policy change that was required by the state, please call the Rutherford County Schools central office.
