A 37-year old woman by the name of Shanda Carney Fanning who was one of two pilots that perished in the fiery plane crash early Wednesday morning in Birmingham, Alabama recently lived in Murfreesboro. Fanning is one of the pilots who was in the UPS cargo plane that went down on its approach to the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport.
Murfreesboro resident Kim Honeycutt told WGNS she has fond memories of Fanning who was currently living in Moore County with her husband Bret Fanning. Honeycutt told us Fanning lived in Charleston South and everyday after school, her son would run over to Fannings home to play his saxophone for her. Fanning would sit and listen and then tell her son about flying. Before flying for UPS, she flew private planes and had the chance to fly Jeff Fisher and Al Gore among many other notable names.
Fanning moved away from Murfreesboro after meeting the love of her life, according to Honeycutt. Prior to her move, she often flew out of the Shelbyville Airport.
It was not immediately clear what caused the jet to crash. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.
